Best Disney of 2012

Best Disney of 2012

Here is the good of Disney during the past year. Cars Land and Buena Vista Street opened at Disney California. Before Cars Land and BVS many other things changed at DCA over the past five years. Arial’s Undersea Adventure was added before Cars Land and the three new rides there. Other rides were rethemed with more of a Disney feel/experience. One ride, The Maliboomer was removed and nothing was put in its place except for some trees in pots.

The Matterhorn underwent a long and major refurbishment at Disneyland. This was the first time since the Matterhorn opened in 1959 that the full mountain was covered with scaffolding. New tracks and bobsleds were installed as well as the entire mountain getting painted outside and in.

Main Street underwent a major refurbishment as well. Added to the enjoyment of Main Street is the Jolly Holiday Bakery. Good food and reasonably priced. While the Carnation Plaza was close it was uncertain for a time if the head chief, Oscar would stay working at the park or retire after 55 years working at Carnation Plaza.

Oscar decided to stay! For a time, at the beginning of the year he would be found at the newly opened Jolly Holiday Bakery. When Carnation Plaza reopened he returned to his ‘home’ and can still be found there talking to guests. You can always stop by and say Hi. Just walk up and ask for Oscar!
Talking Mickey and Minnie came to the parks! They are at DCA in shows more than DL. New shows popped up at DCA using Talking Mickey, Minnie and even Goofy. The shows are Minnie’s Fly Girls, Red Car Trolley News Boys, Five and Dime and Instant Concert Just Add Water.

Other entertainment was added at DCA. A new bandstand was put in Paradise Gardens and bands play there most days, every day during the summer. Each day brings a different ethnic/era style of music. There is the Ellis Island Boys and their 1920-30s jazz, Sligo Rags plays Celtic/Irish music and there is Rumba as well. These bands are not on the schedule and you will need to go back to the area to find out who is playing or friend Ellis Island Boys and Sligo Rags on Facebook to find out when they are playing.

Pin Sharks got caged, at least it was made harder for them to get more than the allowed limit of pins! The frustration of getting one of the prized pins is not as bad.
Candlelight was extended from the original two days/four shows total to 20 nights for a total of 40 performances! Added to this joyful situation the fact that DLR Annual Passholders were given the opportunity to put their names into a drawing for tickets to see the show and it was true MAGIC! Yes I was happy to win 4 tickets to one show!

Changes have been made to tours! The new Walk in Walt’s Footsteps Tour now takes you into Walt’s Main Street Apartment! There is also a tour that explores the plants around the parks. I've yet to do either but they are on my list for 2013 & 14.
The Magic Kingdom at WDW has added a ‘New Fantasyland’ with 2 more castles and many more rides. Old rides were revamped and even Dumbo got a makeover with a double Dumbo and Circus Tent waiting area with pagers that tell you when it is your turn to ride.

Disney Cruise Line had many exciting changes this year! First was the addition of the 4th ship in the fleet, The Disney Fantasy! Fantasy joined her sister ship, the Dream in Port Canaveral, Florida. The Disney Wonder had been doing Mexican Riviera in 2011 but limited the trips to Mexico in 2012 and instead did a Pacific Coast Cruise. This was a good and bad move. Good because the areas in Mexico where the cruise went were getting progressively more violent and it was not same to take your family there, IMHO. Bad because the choices of ports for the Pacific Coast Cruise could have been better. Also the Magic, the original Disney Ship started going out of New York and Galveston, Tx. At the end of 2012 the Wonder went back to Florida and plans are for it to sale out of Miami, Florida and also to go to Alaska for part of the year. One of the ships will be returning to Europe during 2013.
I’m sure I’ve not covered even half of the changes made. Many more changes are coming, some I feel are very good and some I question the wisdom of.
Tomorrow I’ll tell you of some of negative things of 2012.

One Week of Disney Christmas Magic Left!

One Week of Disney Christmas Magic Left!

The Disneyland Resort keeps its Christmas decorations and schedule going until the first weekend in January! That means this year’s Christmas will be extended until January 6th, 2013!

All of the Christmas special events and decorations will continue until January 6th! Santa will be there with Mrs. Claus in the Big Thunder Ranch area to visit with guests. The Christmas Fantasy Parade and Fireworks will continue.

Some things have ended for the season. There will be no more handmade Candy Canes for this year. Sorry folks you will have to wait until next Holiday Season for those.
Now here is the secret! The week just before Christmas and the week between Christmas and New Years are the busiest in the Holiday Season. The week after New Year is much calmer and you will be find shorter lines.

In past years at Disneyland Santa has switched from his standard Holiday Red suit to a green plaid. This is his off season clothing.

I’m not sure what DCA has planned. Santa may no longer be in Elias and Company. If he is he may have his standard suit or switch to an off season suit.

I do know if you wish to see some of the decorations or are not yet ready to let the holiday cheer go Disneyland Resort is the place to be.

Disney Dreams

Disney Dreams

As 2012 quickly comes to an end I start to dream about 2013 and what I’d love to have happen. Dreaming costs NOTHING so why not dream?
I am dreaming of another Disney Cruise. I’d love to go to WDW again then a week long cruise around the Caribbean on the Fantasy. For now I don’t think that will be happening in 2013 but it will be happening in early 2014! Now is the time I need to make plans to save and get ready for my adventure in 2014!
It is my goal to continue to write about Disney here in my blog. I’m also planning on self e-publishing a book or two of tips for traveling Disney. My first will be a book of tips for doing Disney Parks with disabilities. I will not give a blow by blow of how to get on each ride but I’ll give general tips for different types of limitations and ways Disney accommodates the needs of guests.
I am still planning on going to Disneyland as often as possible (hopefully even more than in 2012) and would love to hear what things you all are interested in hearing about. If you ask me questions I'll do my best to answer them.
I know that Candlelight is a must for next Christmas Season no matter what! I am also going to keep an eye on the Limited Time Magic and catch as much of that as possible. I am for sure going to see the Golden Horseshoe Revival show.
Things I’d like to see happen at DLR in 2013. I’d like to see the Billys returned to the Golden Horseshoe. I wish DLR management would drop the idea of charging for Christmas Parties and other ‘special events’. I would LOVE to see Buena Vista Street type Citizens populate Main Street at DL as they do at WDW’s MK.

It's Film Strip Friday! Johnny Tremain

It’s Film Strip Friday!
Johnny Tremain
Release Date June 19th, 1957

Summary:

Meet young Johnny Tremain, a silversmith's apprentice with dreams of learning the trade and making his own way. When a terrible injury ends his hopes, he joins the emerging Sons Of Liberty. The Redcoats are coming as you journey back to the Boston Tea Party, the midnight ride of Paul Revere, and Lexington Green, where tyranny was vanquished by an idea -- freedom for all! Based on the classic novel by Esther Forbes.

FUN FACTS:

Johnny Tremain is a 1957 film made by Walt Disney Productions, based on the 1944 Newbery Medal-winning children's novel of the same name by Esther Forbes, retelling the story of the years in Boston, Massachusetts prior to the outbreak of the American Revolution. The movie was directed by Robert Stevenson. It was made for television, then ultimately released to theatres, and finally wound up on television a year after that, on the Walt Disney anthology television series. It was shown on television in two episodes rather than as a complete film on a single evening. The song "Liberty Tree", with music by George Bruns and Lyrics by Tom Blackburn, became familiar, when the song was placed on the Disney Record album entitled "Happy Birthday and Other Holiday songs".

Plot

Johnny Tremain is an arrogant and exceptionally skilled apprentice silversmith to Mr. Lapham, who dreams of one day owning his own shop and becoming wealthy and respected. All of this is abruptly taken from him when his hand is damaged in a silver accident. He ends up joining the Sons of Liberty in the movement for American independence. Along the way Johnny befriends several historical giants including Paul Revere, Samuel Adams, and Joseph Warren. The story reaches its climax with the start of the American Revolutionary War and the actions taken by so many notable figures of the time to lead a young America into her first battles.

Cast

  • Hal Stalmaster as Johnny Tremain
  • Luana Patten as Priscilla Lapham
  • Jeff York as James Otis
  • Sebastian Cabot as Jonathan Lyte
  • Richard Beymer as Rab Silsbee
  • Walter Sande as Paul Revere
  • Whit Bissell as Josiah Quincy
  • Rusty Lane as Samuel Adams
  • Walter Coy as Dr. Joseph Warren
  • Will Wright as Mr. Lapham
  • Virginia Christine as Mrs. Lapham
  • Ralph Clanton as General Gage
  • Geoffrey Toone as Major Pitcairn
Walt Disney's daughter Sharon Mae Disney also had a small uncredited role as Dorcas, a young friend of Johnny and Priscilla (who in the novel was one of Priscilla's sisters).

Educational films

Portions of Johnny Tremain were used in 1968 for educational purposes. Two distant sequence of the films were issued under the titles of The Boston Tea Party and The Shot Heard ‘Round the World.

Legacy

After the movie was released, Walt Disney intended to build Liberty Street in Disneyland as an annex to Main Street USA. However, the project was never realized. Years later after Walt's death, the concept was revived and turned into the much more expansive Liberty Square in Walt Disney World, which opened on October 1, 1971.
Furthermore, an elm tree found on the Disney property (originally 6 miles from where the Magic Kingdom is located) was moved & transplanted by Disney engineers and now serves as the square's Liberty Tree. Adorning the tree are 13 lanterns, representing the original 13 American colonies.
Louis Marx and Company released an American War of Independence playset featuring character figures of the actors in the show as a film tie-in.

2012 Is ending Welcome 2013 and Limited time Magic!

2012 Is Ending Welcome 2013
and Limited Time Magic!

2012 brought many changes at the DLR resort and more than a few at WDW as well. Over all I say the changes were good. I can only speak of WDW in theory because I’ve only been there once and that was 8 years ago.
The new Fantasyland at MK looks amazing and I’m excited to check it out in a couple of years. That is all I can say about WDW but I know more has happened there
At DLR the majority of changes happened at DCA with the addition of Cars Land, retheming of the entry area to Buena Vista Street and the completion of 5 years of retheming of rides and addition several new rides/attractions. New shows and parades completed the change.
While the New Year is not scheduled to have any new rides or attractions at DLR there are changes. Some changes are for the better some not so good.
For the better it is rumored that Candlelight at DL will be expanded to 30 nights! For the downside of this, they are talking of moving the show INSIDE forcing a huge reduction to the number of choir members used in the show. I can see it going from the current 600 singers down to 100 if they take it inside. Also they will charge to see the show. Price and location is unknown as of yet. Locations rumored are the Fantasyland Theater in DL and the Hyperion Theater in DCA. Neither have stages large enough for a choir the current size of the Candlelight Choir. Neither would be where Walt wanted the show being done.
2013 is bringing some fun with different special events scheduled through the year. These special events are called Limited Time Magic and will last one day to several weekss. They will be doing a revival show in the Golden Horseshoe. This is good but has a problem. This will be a show like the original Wally Boag Western Comedy show but will not have a comedian. It will have the Can-Can Girls, music and dancing. So this will not be a true revival show. Also you will need to get a Fastpass type ticket for the show.
More paid private party events like the Mickey’s Halloween Party are being planned. Rumors say Disneyland will close early for Christmas Party night and only those who pay to go can see the Christmas Fireworks.
I suggest you keep your eyes open for the changes and for the Limited Time Magic. Check the Disney Parks Blog and the Official Disney Limited Time Magic website for updates on the special Limited Time events.

Every Disney Hero Has a Voice Johnny Butler/True Son

Every Disney Hero Has a Voice
Johnny Butler/True Son from
The Light in the Forest (1958)
James Gordon MacArthur
December 8th, 1937 – October 28th, 2010

James Gordon MacArthur (December 8, 1937 – October 28, 2010) was an American actor best known for the role of Danny "Danno" Williams, the reliable second-in-command of the fictional Hawaiian State Police squad Hawaii Five-O.

Early life

Born in Los Angeles, California, MacArthur was adopted as an infant by playwright Charles MacArthur and actress Helen Hayes (he was actually the biological child of Charles MacArthur, the product of his affair with another woman). He grew up in Nyack, New York, along with the MacArthurs' biological daughter, Mary. He was educated at Allen-Stevenson School in New York, and later at the Solebury School in New Hope, Pennsylvania, where he starred in basketball, football, and baseball.
In his final year at Solebury, he played guard on the football team; captained the basketball team; was president of his class, the student government, and the Drama Club; rewrote the school's constitution; edited the school paper, The Scribe; and played Scrooge in a local presentation of A Christmas Carol. He also started dating a fellow student, Joyce Bulifant; they were married in November 1958 and divorced nine years later.
MacArthur grew up around the greatest literary and theatrical talent of the time. Lillian Gish was his godmother, and his family guests included Ben Hecht, Harpo Marx, Robert Benchley, Beatrice Lillie, John Barrymore, and John Steinbeck. His first radio role was on Theatre Guild of the Air, in 1948. The Theatre Guild of the Air was the premier radio program of its day, producing one-hour plays that were performed in front of a live audience of 800. Helen Hayes accepted a role in one of the plays, which also had a small part for a child. Her son was asked if he would like to do it, and agreed.

Acting career

He made his stage debut at Olney, Maryland, in 1949, with a two-week stint in The Corn Is Green. His sister Mary was in the play and telephoned their mother to request that James go to Olney to be in it with her. The following summer, he repeated the role at Dennis, Massachusetts, and his theatrical career was underway. In 1954, he played John Day in Life with Father with Howard Lindsay and Dorothy Stickney. He became involved in important Broadway productions only after receiving his training in summer stock.
He also worked as a set painter, lighting director and chief of the parking lot. During a Helen Hayes festival at the Falmouth Playhouse on Cape Cod, he had a few walk-on parts. He also helped the theatre electrician and grew so interested that he was allowed to stay on after his mother's plays had ended. As a result, he lighted the show for Barbara Bel Geddes in The Little Hut and for Gloria Vanderbilt in The Swan. When he visited Paris with his mother as a member of The Skin of Our Teeth Company, he was in charge of making thunder backstage with a sheet of metal.
At the age of 18, he played Hal Ditmar in the television play, Deal a Blow, directed by John Frankenheimer and starring Macdonald Carey, Phyllis Thaxter and Edward Arnold. In 1956, Frankenheimer directed the movie version of the play, which was renamed The Young Stranger, with MacArthur again in the starring role. Again his performance was critically acclaimed, earning him a nomination for Most Promising Newcomer at the 1958 BAFTA awards. He made The Light in the Forest and Third Man on the Mountain, for Walt Disney, during summer breaks from Harvard University, where he was studying history. Deciding to make acting his full-time career, he left Harvard in his sophomore year to make two more Disney movies, Kidnapped and Swiss Family Robinson. In February 2003, Conrad Richter's novel The Light in the Forest was one of the books selected for Ohio's One Book, Two Counties project. MacArthur was a guest speaker, and talked of how the book was turned into the film and of his experiences making the movie.
He made his Broadway debut in 1960, playing opposite Jane Fonda in Invitation to a March, for which he received a Theater World Award. Although he never returned to Broadway, he remained active in theatre, appearing in such productions as Under the Yum Yum Tree, The Moon Is Blue, John Loves Mary (with his then wife, Joyce Bulifant), Barefoot in the Park and Murder at the Howard Johnson's. He then went on to star in such movies as The Interns, Spencer's Mountain, The Truth About Spring and Cry of Battle, as well as The Love-Ins and The Angry Breed. On the set of The Angry Breed, in 1968, MacArthur met Melody Patterson, who was to become his second wife. They were married on the Hawaiian Island of Kauai, in July 1970, but divorced several years later. In 1963, he was nominated for the "Top New Male Personality" category of the Golden Laurel Awards.
Between movie and theatre roles, MacArthur was also in demand for television guest appearances, which included parts in Studio One, G.E. Theatre, Bus Stop the play, Bus Stop the television series, Bonanza, Gunsmoke, Wagon Train, The Eleventh Hour, The Great Adventure, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, Combat!, The Virginian. In 1966 he guest-starred as Lt. Harley Wilson in the "The Outsider", episode 20 in the second season of 12 O-Clock High (TV series). He co-starred with his mother Helen Hayes in the 1968 episode "The Pride of the Lioness" on the Tarzan television series. MacArthur also gave a particularly chilling performance as baby-faced opium dealer "Johnny Lubin" in The Untouchables episode, "Death For Sale".
Though not all his movie parts were starring roles, and some were quite brief, they were usually pivotal to the plot. His role in The Bedford Incident was that of a young ensign who becomes so rattled by the needling of his Captain (Richard Widmark) that he accidentally fires an ASROC at a Soviet submarine, thus (we are given to understand) starting World War III.
In Battle of the Bulge he again played the role of a young and inexperienced officer. This time, however, the officer finds courage and a sense of responsibility. His brief but memorable appearance in the Clint Eastwood movie, Hang 'Em High eventually led to his role as Dan Williams in Hawaii Five-O, popularizing the catch phrase "Book 'em Danno."

Hawaii Five-O

In 1967, Leonard Freeman, the producer and co-writer of Hang 'Em High, made the pilot for a new television cop show, Hawaii Five-O. Before it went to air, the pilot was well received by test audiences, except for some dislike of the actor playing Dan Williams. Freeman remembered MacArthur's portrayal of the traveling preacher in Hang 'Em High: He had come on the set and done the scene in one take. He called MacArthur and offered him the role of Dan Williams. Hawaii Five-O ran for twelve years—eleven with MacArthur. Leaving Hawaii Five-O at the end of its eleventh season, MacArthur returned to the theatre, appearing in The Lunch Hour with Cybill Shepherd.

Post- Hawaii Five-O

He appeared in A Bedfull of Foreigners in Chicago in 1984, and in Michigan in 1985. He followed this with The Hasty Heart, before taking a year out of show business. In 1987, he returned to the stage in The Foreigner, then played Mortimer in the national tour of Arsenic and Old Lace with Jean Stapleton, Marion Ross and Larry Storch. In 1989, he followed another stint in The Foreigner with Love Letters and, in 1990–1991, A Bedfull of Foreigners, this time in Las Vegas.
After leaving Hawaii Five-O, McArthur guest-starred on such television shows as Murder, She Wrote, The Love Boat, Fantasy Island and Vega$, as well as in the mini series Alcatraz: The Whole Shocking Story and The Night the Bridge Fell Down, and in the 1998 television movie Stormchasers: Revenge of the Twister, with Kelly McGillis.

Semi-retirement

Throughout his career, MacArthur had also found time for various other ventures. From 1959–60, he partnered with actor James Franciscus and Alan Ladd, Jr. in a Beverly Hills telephone answering service; in June 1972, he directed The Honolulu Community Theatre in a production of his father's play The Front Page, and, for a period in the 1990s he was part-owner of Senior World publication, as well as writing the occasional celebrity interview. He continued to appear at conventions, collectors' shows, and celebrity sporting events. A keen golfer, he was the winner of the 2002 Frank Sinatra Invitational Charity Golf Tournament.
He also appeared in television and radio specials and interview programs. His latest appearances included spots on Entertainment Tonight, Christopher's Closeup and the BBC Radio 5 Live obituary program Brief Lives, in which he paid tribute to his Hawaii Five-O castmate, the late Kam Fong. In 1997, MacArthur returned without Jack Lord (who was in declining health) to reprise his character, who had become Hawaii's Governor in the plot, in the 1997 unaired pilot of Hawaii Five-O which starred actor Gary Busey. In April 2003, he traveled to Honolulu's historic Hawaii Theatre for a cameo role in Joe Moore's play Dirty Laundry. Negotiations were underway in summer 2010 for MacArthur to make a cameo appearance in the new CBS prime time remake of Hawaii Five-0 at the time of his death, a role that eventually was given to Al Harrington. On the November 1, 2010 episode, MacArthur's death was mentioned in a short tribute that played before the start of that episode.
In 2001, a Golden Palm Star on the Palm Springs, California, Walk of Stars was dedicated to him.

Death

MacArthur died of natural causes on October 28, 2010, at the age of 72, at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. He was survived by his third wife, H. B. Duntz, and his four children and six grandchildren. The episode "Ho'apono" from the 2010 version of Hawaii Five-0 was dedicated to MacArthur.
He is interred in Nyack, New York's Oak Hill Cemetery.
