Two Statues of Walt and Mickey

Two Statues of Walt and Mickey

At the Disneyland Resort the two most photographed things in the parks are the two statues of Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse. The two statues are different and have a different ‘message’ to share.

The Partners Statue in the Central Hub of Disneyland has Sleeping Beauties Castle behind it. The Partners statues has older Walt Disney holding the hand of his friend and partner, Mickey Mouse. Walt’s free hand is outstretched and he is pointing town Main Street. I can almost hear Walt telling Mickey, “Look at all that we've accomplished Mickey!” For many years now these two partners have stood together looking at the Magic they made together. I know even the oldest of Disney fans will stop and look and maybe even cry a little.

Over at Disney California Adventure the new Storytellers statue was commissioned and made for the central end of Buena Vista Street. This statue is of a young Walt having just arrived in Hollywood. His hat is set back a bit and you can see an optimistic smile on his face. His jacket is tossed over his shoulder unneeded in the California sunshine. On top of Walt’s cardboard suitcase, upended at his side, stands an early Pie Eyed Mickey Mouse ready to make the world laugh.

Together these two statues create bookends for Walt’s life.

The Partners statue shows Walt looking back at what he had accomplished. Walt is standing there with his partner Mickey happy at the joy he had brought the world through his life’s work. You can see the pride and happiness at all he has done.

Made second yet showing Walt at a younger age is the Storytellers Statue. This statue tells the story of Walt as he arrived in Hollywood, Ca at the age of 22. Even though he arrived broke, having suffered his third financial setback in his still short life he was optimistic and hopeful, looking forward to what would come in the future. In his face you can see the dreams, his hopes and imagination. Mickey is beside him yet in reality Mickey was not yet there. Mickey was waiting to come to life just five years later. Yet that hopeful, funny little mouse was there in Walt’s playful fertile mind. Not Mickey Mouse exactly but a playful little character full of personality.

I love both of these statues. Partners Walt is the Walt of my childhood, the Uncle Walt I saw on TV every week telling me what amazing stories would be coming next. This Walt brings out the nostalgic part of me. This Walt brings out the feeling of being a little child safe and comfortable.

The Storytellers statue brings out an entirely different set of feelings. I see Walt as a young man excited and hopeful ready to work and work hard to succeed. I see the playful smile and the silly Pie Eyed Mickey waiting to come out of his fertile mind. Storytellers gets me excited and stirs me to be creative and take chances. The “anything is possible if you have courage and conviction” attitude shown in his face and stance is infectious.

Together these two statues remind me that if you have a dream and are willing to do the work you can achieve anything. Storytellers shows me the dreamer while Partners shows me the pride and pleasure of seeing your dreams come true. Thank you Walt Disney for giving me the encouragement to dream. Thank you Disney Company and the designers of the statues for sharing them.

I hope you will be encouraged to dream and not let people tell you that your dreams are wrong. I pray you will find the courage and strength to stick with your dreams and see them come true.

The Storytellers Statue

The Storytellers Statue

The new center point of the hub of Disney California Adventure is the Storyteller Statue. This is a beautiful statue that never fails to stir my heart and bring tears to my eyes. One thing I love about this statue is unlike the Partner Statue you can walk right up to Walt and stand next to him. It is life size not bigger than life. You can put your arm around Walt and make him part of your picture and therefore your dreams.

This statue of Walt and his alter ego Mickey Mouse looks over the park, not with the, “Look what we did!” look of the Partners Statue of Disneyland but with the look of youthful excitement full of dreams and promise. They stand there in 1923 Hollywood, California with Walt dreaming of what he can do now that he is here. Hollywood in its heyday of movie magic! Hollywood the place of unlimited dreams and ultimate dreamers.

Storytellers reminds me to hold onto my dreams. It encourages me to not give up but to keep trying and even when I get a “good kick in the teeth” to get back up and try again. I see Walt’s expression and think, “I can still dream and it can come true.”

Storytellers is a great bookend piece with Partners at the other end. Storytellers shows Walt at the beginning dreaming of his “little studio”, yet to be started and success as an artist/animator in the new cartoon world. He is looking ahead and not knowing where he will end up but looking forward to the journey.

Partners is Walt looking back saying, “Look what we did Mickey!” Walt in Partners is not looking just at the cartoons or even just the park. He is looking back at a lifelong body of work that touched not just the movie/entertainment industry but in many ways touched America and therefor the world at large.

Partners is the Walt of my youth. That is how I remember seeing Walt on TV as a child during Wonderful World of Color and other shows. I have a special place in my heart for the elder Walt. But still, Storytellers stirs something else inside me. It is Walt in his prime full of strength and dreams, unafraid to challenge the way the world thought about “simple” drawings.

I hope even as I reach an age where most people are slowing down and stepping out of the way for “younger dreamers” to go for their dreams that I never forget Walt the dreamer that never stopped dreaming. I pray I keep dreaming and trying to reach for those stars until my last breath just as he did.

The Storyellers Statue

The Storytellers Statue

With all the work going on at Disney California Adventure the one thing that has me the most excited is the new statue that will go up in the newly named Hollywoodland.

The Storytellers statue is a statue of a hopeful looking young Walt Disney just arriving in Hollywood with Mickey Mouse standing on top of the Walt’s upturned suitcase. Both are looking ahead to a future together of excitement and entertainment.

This statue is designed to be a bookend to the Partners Statue in the Central Hub of Disneyland. The Storytellers is the beginning of the story with Walt looking ahead to the future, full of dreams and excitement. Walt is looking ahead to all the stories he will tell. In Disneyland’s Central Hub the Partners Statue is the end of the story. Walt is standing there with Mickey saying, “Look at what we have done!”

One thing that will be different between the two statues is placement. The Partners Statue is on a pedestal in the middle of a flower garden, unreachable by the guests. This is a favorite picture spot for guests. The Storytellers statue will be placed so it is accessible to guests. It will be approximately life size.

I’m excited about this Storytellers statue! I’m excited because it is a realistic representation of how Walt looked in the mid 1920’s when he arrived in California. It shows his excitement and therefore encourages excitement in me. It shows his enthusiasm even after he had only $40 in his pocket and not much else! It reminds us that Disney movies, parks, or cruises would not have existed without his vision.

Walt Disney often said, “I hope we never lose site that it all started with a mouse.” I believe it all started with one man’s dreams and his funny mouse that had his personality. I’m headed right there to get my picture taken!
