Parental Responsibility and Disney Destinations

Parental Responsibility and Disney Destinations

You are at Disney. Does not matter what park, resort or cruise ship. You feel safe and just want to have fun. But that does not mean you are not a parent and have responsibilities for your child’s safety. It seems that some parents think that everything is a safe protected bubble while in a Disney environment. I wish that was true. Parents, watch your children. Don’t let them get into a dangerous situation. Don’t put your child in danger.

I cannot count the stories I’ve heard of children getting hurt at Disney Parks, Resorts or on the Disney Cruise ships. Parents feel it is safe, so they step away, even for a moment and their child gets into a pool. Maybe one parent thinks a child is with the other parent and they lose track for a moment. I know of a family that had this happen. The child wonders off and gets hurt. Things happen. It is not Disney’s fault if you don’t watch your child. Do I think you need to keep a leash on your child 24/7 at Disney? No, unless they have an elopement issue or are neurodivergent and doesn’t realize dangers. Just be aware. Only you know your child best.

The most recent story really hurts my mama heart. I love children. I hurt when I see a child hurt. June 30th parents lost track of their 5-year-old daughter while on deck 4. Exactly how this happened is under investigation. The ship was moving at sea. The child fell off deck 4 into the ocean and the father jumped in after her. Only around 20% or less of people who fall off of cruise ships survive. That means 80% or more don’t survive.  The father kept his daughter afloat while rescuers came. Thankfully both survived with little apparent injury.

As soon as they went over Disney Crew Members sounded the alert of a man overboard. They tossed life preservers to them. The bridge was notified and the ship stopped and turned around. A lifeboat was deployed, and rescuers safely returned the father and daughter to the ship in around 30 minutes.

Disney did their job to protect the guests in their care. I feel they went above and beyond to do so. They showed their exceptional dedication to safety and skill. You may think the parents are bad parents. I think they got complacent and felt over safe. But the dad did what he had to do to save his daughter’s life. We all make mistakes. I’m sure they feel horrible.

You may think this is the end of the story. But it may not be. For example, when you get on a ride at a Disney Park you are told to keep your body parts inside the car at all times. A 16-year-old, who in my opinion is old enough to know better, stuck his foot under the moving car of Alice in Wonderland at DLR. The wheels of the car sliced off his toes. Because of that incident doors were installed on the ride vehicles. These doors make it harder to load and unload, especially for those with mobility issues. There are countless other examples of this type of response to someone putting themselves in danger.

I can honestly see the 4th deck of Disney Cruise Ships being closed in and all railings on the ship, including those on private verandas being raised to stop someone from doing this again. Is that a good idea? I don’t think so. It would detract from the fun of cruising! You would not be able to enjoy the deck and feel the ocean breeze as well. It is only being done because someone could not follow the simple rules! It would happen because someone did not think about safety and put someone else in danger.

PDD or Post Disney Vacation Depression – Disney Parks VS Disney Cruise

PDD or Post Disney Vacation Depression – Disney Parks VS Disney Cruise

When you go to a Disney Park and stay for a while you get sucked into the magic. You love the characters, you feel like you are visiting old friends, rides and the spoiled feeling of the resorts. For years the bus taking people to/from MCO to the WDW Resort was called the Magical Express. Return trips to MCO were often called Tragical Express by guests because of the emotions people felt leaving. Nobody wants to go home!

People enjoy the magical feelings. The chance to be outside your normal life and stress. As Walt said, “Here you leave the world of Today and enter the world of Yesterday, Tomorrow and Fantasy.” People don’t want to leave the temporary reprieve from daily life and return to the humdrum work a day life. They miss the escape of jumping on a ride, being swept up in an amazing show or walking in a beautiful resort without a care in the world.

The Parks are bad enough, but Post Disney Cruise Depression is worse! DCL takes it to a whole new level. At the parks you miss the momentary things. On the cruise it is EVERY LITTLE THING!! You miss the fact you can’t just quickly go grab something to eat or call room service at anytime for a bite to eat. You wake up and think, “I want to just pop up to the Buffet for breakfast/brunch.” “I want to just sit at the Main Restaurant for Lunch and pick whatever I want.” “Oh I wonder what they are serving tonight in . . . Restaurant!” You walk into the bathroom and find a towel dropped on the floor. You think about how there were never towels on the floor because your Room Steward took care of them. Your bed is messed up. Where is . . . your wonderful steward? Time to eat dinner? You need to cook it or figure out where you will go instead of going to the Main Dining Restaurant. Evening comes and no show to entertain you. You want a few quiet moments with your spouse, but the kids don’t have the Kids Club to go to and need help with their homework. It’s just not fair!! RIGHT?!?! No, it is life and life just is well life. So work your life so you can enjoy Cruising!

It is every little moment of the day that reminds you of your cruise experience! So what do you do to resolve this longing?? BOOK ANOTHER TRIP!!! Start planning. Think of how you will up your Pirate Costume or how you dress up for a particular restaurant. Look at the Port Adventures in different ports and dream of going someday and start planning. Maybe add some cruise or beach themed decor to your home. Join DCL Facebook groups and talk to others about your mutual case of Cruising Fever.

How can I say all of this??? Because I’m helplessly, hopelessly and completely addicted to Disney Cruising!!! I’ve got several cruises booked and more planned in my head.

Disney Cruise Line is getting Bands!!! Hands Free at Sea!

Disney Cruise Line is getting Bands!!!

Hands Free at Sea!

Disney Parks have Magic Band and Magic Band+. These wearable devices are great additions when visiting the parks. They give you an electronic way to access your park ticket with the tap of the wrist. You can use it to link to your PhotoPass when you are at the PhotoPass Photographers. It does capture your attraction photos as well if you have purchased the PhotoPass! You can link a credit/debit card to it for making purchases. They will also open hotel room doors at WDW resort hotels! They also will alarm, vibrate and charm when your Lightning Lane return time has come. If you have a DAS Pass it will also remind you when your return times have come. During shows, like fireworks and parades the Magic Bands+ will light up, vibrate and chime.

Disney Cruise Line is going to be testing their version of Magic Band+ on the Wish soon! They are calling them DisneyBand+. Once activated you will be able to use them to board the ship, they will act like your Key to the World Card and unlock your cabin door and identify you boarding and debarking the ship. You will be able to use it to make purchases on the ship, Castaway Cay and Lighthouse Point as well. DisneyBand+ are waterproof and you can enjoy them swimming in the ships pools, hot tubs, AquaMouse, or Snorkeling on Castaway Cay and Lighthouse Point.

At this time it appears that Magic Band+ and DCL DisneyBand+ will be interchangeable and you can use them at both the Disney Parks and on the Disney Cruise Ships. Disney made comments about you being able to use the DisneyBands+ on future Disney vacations, both on the ships and in the parks.

DisneyBand+ is not included in your cruise fare. You can purchase them for $34.99-$44.99. When they become available you will be able to preorder them from DCL or maybe ShopDisney.com. tt takes about 10 days for delivery. There will be 3 DCL exclusive designs.

Hands Free Coming to Sea! Check out this video and see some of the designs! There are 3 DCL exclusive designs!

Disney Education? Yes PLEASE!!! ~ Disney Imagination Campus

Disney Education? Yes PLEASE!!!

~ Disney Imagination Campus ~

Walt Disney once said, "You can not entertain without educating. You can't educate without entertaining." He believed in something he called Edutainment. The combination of Education and Entertainment.

Disney Imagination Campus is at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts. So what is Disney Imagination Campus?

There are 4 different education programs in the Disney Imagination Campus.

  • Performing Arts
    • Performing groups will receive the rare opportunity to hone their craft while learning from real working Disney professionals and perform on Disney stages.
  • Arts & Humanities
    • Students will solve a real-world challenge around the design of one of our theme park’s lands, areas, or attractions as it relates to storytelling.
  • Science & Technology
    • Students will use scientific principles such as gravity, force, and peed to understand how these principles apply to the design of new and classic Disney theme park attractions.
  • Leadership & Innovation
    • Students will discover how to become future leaders by developing a common passion for knowledge, global vision and innovation.

Along with the classes Disney allows the group to purchase theme park tickets at a discount.

Do you have a class, youth group, choir, band, or club that could benefit from this program? Let us know and we will help you book it!

Disney uses their curriculum and learning environment to foster creative thinking, fearless exploration and Disney Magic. The mission is to provide students with tools they need to express themselves creatively and academically and prepare them for real-world challenges.

Are You Too Old or Disabled for a Disney Trip?

Are You Too Old or Disabled for a Disney Trip?

Simple answer is NO!!! As long as you can move and not bedridden you can go!! Disabilities, cognitive and mobility along with other health issues should not stop you if you REALLY want to go!!

Is it a good idea to go to Disney if you are older? Emotionally I believe so! I’m a strong believer if taking anybody who wants to go to Disney, Parks or Cruise, no matter what limitations they have!!

Of course, there are some major things to consider. First off you must consider if you are strong enough to travel to get there and deal with the stress of going all day or good parts of a day. Set limits!! Know what you can and cannot do. Know how long you can spend up and about. What devices can you take to assist and make things easier? Walker, crutches, wheelchairs, and scooters can help with mobility and stamina issues. Consider using them even if you don’t usually need them! Remember you will be walking further than you usually do. If you don’t own them rent them if you can! Disney Parks have Wheelchairs and Scooters to rent. DCL does not so you would have to use an outside service to rent or take your own.

At the parks know what rides and attractions you can do. Look at them closely and maybe look at YouTube videos so you can make wise decisions. On the cruise look closely at things to do on and off the ship and make well informed decisions.

Know how long you can stay up and about. Is your stamina limited to a 6-8-hour day? Don’t expect a change in your stamina just because you are at Disney. Limit how long you stay in the parks! Head back to the hotel and take a nap if you want to do something in the parks later in the day. Maybe hit a show instead of a ride so you can relax while watching it. Breaking up your day is super easy on the cruise!! Your cabin is never to far away to head back for some rest and quite time.

Be aware of weather! You need to make sure you are not out when it is too hot or cold for you. Know your bodies limits! Just because you want to see the summertime fun or holiday decorations it may not be best for YOU. Choose the best time for your body then for the things you want to do/see.

Arrange for HELP while there!! Make sure there is someone in your party physically able to assist you if needed. Cast Members and Crew cannot help you physically move from your wheelchair/scooter to a chair, ride, or tinder boat. Someone from your travel party must help if you need assistance or you can’t do it.

Plan well!! Make a list of Must Does for each park/day. Schedule things in the parks so you are not going back and forth across the park(s). Plan breaks! Ride then sit and relax before moving onto the next thing. Understand you may not be able to do all you want because of availability and your physical limits. Go for the biggest things first. Set reasonable goals.

Taking a service animal? Make sure you know the policies and procedures. Follow the rules for where to take your service animal to relieve themselves and be aware they can’t go on every attraction. There are crates to place them in while you ride or someone in your party must hold them for you. Yes, service animals are allowed on the Disney Cruise but there are extra procedures you need to follow. They will need a health check before they can go. Disney Parks and Cruise are very accommodating to service animals.

If you are eligible for a DAS (Disability Access Pass) at the parks USE IT!! You still need to wait your turn, but it is not in a line so you can find a place to relax. You get a return time to ride a ride and you can go get a meal, find a ride with a shorter line, wonder in an air-conditioned store, or just find a place to sit and people watch until the return time comes. Don’t be afraid or ashamed to ask for help. I have another post describing DAS so check that one out for more information.

If cruising, make sure you notify Disney Cruise Line of your needs. Do you need an extension cord for your CPap or water? Let them know before you go! Tell them of your allergies and things like diabetes that affect what you can eat. If you need an accessible cabin, make sure you request it when booking. Do you need a sign language interpreter? Make sure to request it ahead of time! You can also request a cabin equipped for those with hearing loss. Whatever the special need, talk to them!! Make sure to tell your travel agent of your special needs so they can help you make the requests.

Here is an example of a trip working for a disabled person. My mum-in-love wanted to go on a Disney Cruise for her 90th birthday. She had never been on a cruise before. She had dementia and physical limitations. We took her and she loved it!! It greatly improved her quality of life and mental, emotional stability.

I am a travel agent who loves helping people with special needs travel! Ask me any question and I’ll be happy to answer. Let me help you book your next vacation! I can make it happen!

Disability Access System – DAS

 Disability Access System – DAS

DAS is the Disability Access System available at the Disney Parks. This system is not a one size fits all or a front of the line pass. PLEASE do NOT ask for or get a DAS Pass just to cut the lines. Abuse of the system makes it hard for all of those who really need it.

There are two ways to get your DAS Pass:

1.       You can either go to the DLR app or to your WDW My Disney Experience App and do a Online Video Chat with a Cast Member between 2-30 days prior to your arrival. If you sign up Online you will get 2 return times for the first day. You can pick 2 attractions to ride on when you get there!

2.       You can go to Guest Services (either at the Guest Services Building or at a Guest Services Umbrella placed throughout the parks) and talk to a Cast Member and get your DAS Pass.

Y    Once you have ridden your chosen attraction you can either return to Guest Services to obtain your next return time or you can get a new return time in the App!

What does DAS do for your special need.

DAS is not a go to the head of the line pass. For all special needs you will be given a return time to ride the attraction. You will return at or after your return time, show your DAS Pass Return Time on your App and enter the Lighting Lane. The wait time from there is usually 15-20 minutes.

Cognitive Issues:

This includes ADHD, Autism, Traumatic Brain Damage, Behavioral Issues, any issue that makes long lines impossible. (PLEASE do NOT use this unless you really need it.)

Mobility Issues:

The DAS system is not that big a help for those with mobility issues, it does allow you to have an accommodating access if a wheelchair does not fit in the line or there are steps involved.

All lines at WDW are wheelchair accessible. Many of the lines at DLR are accessible and those that are not accessible have an alternative entrance. You will get the DAS to obtain a return time or speak to a CM at Guest Relations or at the attraction.

Wheelchair and ECV rental is available at the parks or you can bring your own.

Hearing Impairment:

If you have hearing impairment you can get an assisted listening device or portable live caption. Disney Parks also have ASL interpreters available. You can check showtimes for live shows to see what showing has an ASL interpreter. Just tell the Cast Member when you arrive at the show that you need to be where you can see the ASL interpreter.

Visual Impairment:

Disney Parks has multiple ways of assisting those with Visual Impairment:

Service Animals are allowed in the parks.*

Audio Description Device is available to use with a refundable deposit.

Braille Guidebooks is available to use with a refundable deposit.

Portable Tactile Map Book is available to use with a refundable deposit.

Stationary Braille Maps.

*Service Animals are allowed in the parks:

You must be able to leave your dog while riding on some attractions. Either a person traveling with you needs to hold your dog or they must be crated. Cast Members are not allowed to hold your dog. There are crates available to leave your animal in while riding an attraction.

There are Service Animal Relief areas around the parks. You are responsible for cleaning up after your animal.

Disney Genie+ Service and 2023 Theme Park Tickets & Resort Bookings Update for Walt Disney World Resort

Disney Genie+ Service and 2023 Theme Park Tickets & Resort Bookings

Update for Walt Disney World Resort

Disney has released an update about the Disney Genie+ program at Walt Disney World. These changes do not affect guests at the Disneyland Resort.

Because Disney Genie+ is very popular at Walt Disney World. It is in such high demand amongst guests that Walt Disney World Resort is making changes to the program.

Starting June 8th, Disney Genie+ will only be offered through the My Disney Experience App ON THE DAY OF VISIT – Disney will no longer offer the option to purchase Genie+ pre-arrival as a ticket add-on for dates remaining in 2022 and 2023.

This means ALL guests, no matter the ticket type will now purchase Disney Genie+ on the day of their visit via the My Disney Experience App, one day at a time, subject to availability.

Disney expects that, on average, guests who purchase Disney Genie+ service will continue to enter 2-3 attractions or experiences each day using the Lightning Lane entrance when the first selection is made early in the day.

If you have already purchased a ticket or package that includes Disney Genie+ service for dates later in 2022, the service WILL be honored during your visit!

Additionally, Walt Disney World Resort theme park tickets, Disney Resort Hotel stays and packages for visits in 2023 will also open booking beginning June 8th! More information on 2023 packages and ticket product will be released soon!

Early Theme Park Entry benefit for Resort Hotel guests will continue throughout all of 2023, giving Resort guests the first chance to enjoy select attractions at every theme park, every day (valid admission, park reservation and Resort ID required).

Disney Cruise or Disney Parks for a Multi Generation Family Vacation? What is best??

Disney Cruise or Disney Parks for a Multi Generation Family Vacation? What is best??

So, you want your parents to go with you and your kids on a Disney Vacation. You want your parents to be part of your kids fun and see them having joy and experiencing Disney Magic. Do you book a stay at Walt Disney World, Disneyland, or a Disney Cruise? After doing both with my family I highly suggest choosing a Disney Cruise!

First off after looking at the prices for a Disney Hotel, Park Tickets, and food a Disney Cruise is LESS expensive!! Hard to believe but true!! Remember that 99% of your food and drinks (except alcohol), and entertainment is included on a Disney Cruise!

Second a Disney Cruise it is more relaxed!! At the Disney Parks your child is with you the entire time unless you pay for a sitter, or they are old enough to be allowed to go off on their own for a short time. The adults can’t go off for a meal or to get a drink by themselves. On a Disney Cruise the kids clubs can keep your kids entertained all day and well into the night. You can mix and match all day!! Grandparents take the kids to the pool in the afternoon and spend time with them. Mom and dad go to Palo for a romantic Adult Only brunch!!! Mom and Dad take the kids to a craft class or to meet the characters for photos! Grandparents go to Palo for Brunch! Kids are in the club and the adults go for a drink, hit the spa, catch some of the adult entertainment or watch a movie. The entire family can play Match Your Family, take a craft class, learn to draw a Disney Character, do any of the other family activities, watch a movie or swim! The possibilities are ENDLESS.

On a Disney Cruise you can all find something special to do! You can unite as a family and enjoy things together. You can also find special things for adults and children to do separately. There is no, I want to do this ride not that one. Even teens will find something special to do in Edge and Vibe. They will make new friends; these friendships may last for years!!

Do you want to book a Disney Cruise Family vacation? Let me know!

Travel Insurance ~ What is it, do I really need it and when should I add it?

Travel Insurance ~
What is it, do I really need it and when should I add it?

When you purchase travel from a Travel Agent one of the questions they will ask you is, “Do you want Travel Insurance?” Good question!!!!

Travel Insurance is insurance to protect you if anything happens that affects your travel plans. Travel Insurance can protect your vacation financial investment if for reasons of illness or family emergency you can’t travel. It can also cover trip delays, lost luggage, and medical emergencies while on vacation and even trip cancelation due to weather. The weather coverage is especially nice if you are doing a cruise during Hurricane Season (June-November). If your travel plans are interrupted all you lose is the insurance premium not the entire vacation savings. That way you are free to reschedule another trip right away.

Disney Company uses Travelex Insurance services. When booking make sure you look at the Travel Insurance offered and see what it covers and what is excluded for your particular package. I suggest making sure you think about your family situation. Do you have anybody in your travel group or family that is elderly or ill? Could their health effect your plans and make you cancel your trip? I think about my elderly mother-in-love when considering Travel Insurance. If something happens to her I would change my plans no matter what the cost. Are you going during seasons where weather could affect your travel plans? I think of travel delays caused by winter storms and hurricanes when considering the need.

Many really good Travel Agents will suggest you add Travel Insurance when you book your trip. This is good because you know you are covered right from the start if for any reason your plans change. But, read on my travel buddies! There are problems with this! There are reasons to rethink if you need it and when to add it.

Yes, I believe Travel Insurance is a good decision for most people. If you are young, health and your extended family is healthy you may want to skip insurance. So when to add it is the question! Disney allows you to add Travel Insurance to your trips booked with them up to the time you make your last payment. So if you wish to pay for your vacation in full hold off $50 and wait until the last day. Go purchase a Disney Gift Card for $50 and use it to hold off paying if you want to make sure you don’t spend it for anything else. Then add the Travel Insurance with that final payment but not before!

Disney understands that plans change and people plan a year in advance or more to go on their Disney Vacation. Things happen and people need to cancel their reservations. That is why Disney allows you to cancel your reservations with no penalty in most cases up to the stated cancellation date. (Some reservations do have a no cancellation policy so read before your book and ask your Travel Agent.) You will get the entire amount refunded to you.

So why wait to add Travel Insurance if Disney understands that you might have to cancel? Because if you have paid for insurance you will lose the premium for the insurance even if you cancel before the stated cancellation date. So wait! You will not lose any money if you cancel and if you don’t cancel you can add it with the final payment protecting yourself when you need it most, when you are past the cancellation date and traveling.

Long post just to say, Travel Insurance is a good thing to have but wait until time for your final payment to add it so if you cancel before that you don’t lose the price of the insurance premium.

Navigating Disney Parks Disability Access System (DAS) Quick Overview and How/When to Ask for It

Navigating Disney Parks Disability Access System (DAS)
Quick Overview and How/When to Ask for It

The DAS (Disability Access System) at the Disney Parks is to assist those with disabilities have access to the attractions.

In simple terms the DAS system is to help those with Disabilities have the access they need. With the fact that Walt Disney World Parks and Disney California Adventure Park were built after the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) went into effect it means they comply with ADA laws. That means the lines for the attractions and show areas are designed with disabled access in mind. The lines are wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs and scooters and if the loading area is not accessible they have a secondary loading area. Disneyland on the other hand was made before ADA laws and lines do not always accommodate wheelchairs and scooters. Many of these lines can’t be changed due to space limitations. Disneyland has separate lines set up for wheelchairs/scooters where applicable. What does this all this ADA information mean? It means that just because you have a mobility issue you will not automatically be given a DAS Pass. You can sit on your scooter/chair in the regular lines.

So if the DAS is not for “physical disabilities” that require mobility devices what is it for? It is for those with issues that make being in long lines hard or impossible. Mostly it is for those with cognitive disabilities. Autism, extreme ADHD, Panic Attacks and PTSD are several things that fall into the list. But that is not the only thing. If you have a physical disability that makes sitting or standing in one place impossible/dangerous then you can get the DAS Pass.

So how do you get a DAS Pass? Go to Guest Relations in any park. Be ready to explain your disability. Tell them in simple terms why you need help and what your limitations are. BE HONEST!! Do not lie and ask for the DAS when you don’t truly need it. Be persistent if you truly need it. If you tell them you can’t stand for a long time they may well tell you to go rent a wheelchair or scooter so you can sit. Don’t be intimated by their questions nor the fact they may say no at first. They are not there to outright deny you the pass or judge you. They are there to weed out those that are faking and taking advantage to “cut lines”. They are there to find the best possible option for you. As long as you honestly need it and you are willing to explain why you need it they will at least try. If your disability makes you nervous talking in a loud room ask to be taken to a back stage quiet room to discuss your needs.

For further information on how DAS works check out an earlier blog post:
Yes it does repeat some of the same information I just gave but it is important information and people have told me they can’t get DAS when I know they should.

Traveling Disney Parks with Babies and Children

Traveling Disney Parks with Babies and Children

Traveling to a Disney Park with an infant or young child can be daunting. There are many concerns. What supplies do you need? What accommodations are available inside the parks and at the Disney hotels? Is it worth the stress? Should you wait until they are old enough to remember the trip?

First off if your child is very young (under 2 or 3) they may not be able to remember this special trip, so why take them? Because YOU will remember it! You will have precious memories of your child at Disney. You will have pictures of your little prince or princess with the Disney characters that soon will become part of their lives through cartoons and movies. These will become part of their memories by you telling the stories and showing them the pictures.

There are lots of ways to make taking a baby or young child to Disney easier. Bring or rent a stroller for a young child. Bringing your own stroller can be a chore if you are flying. Checking it in and picking it up and the risk of loss or damage make it a risk as well as a hassle to bring your own strollers. The Disney Strollers are good enough for a single day but if you are staying multiple days you may want to consider renting from an outside rental company that will allow you to take the stroller back to your hotel either on property or off. Do you really want to carry your child back to the hotel from the park? How about the hassle of having to check in the stroller at one park when going to another in the same day? Here are two companies recommended by the Disney Experts at the Disney’s Mom’s Panel.

Disneyland and the California area:
Walt Disney World and the Orlando, Florida area:

Both of these companies deliver to your hotel and provide the extras needed upon request. You can order cribs and other needs as well. You can take your strollers out of the resort and to different resorts and areas if you wish.

Restrooms around the parks have changing stations so you can care for your little one. But when you need a quiet place to nurse, feed or just let your little one calm down check out the Baby Care Centers in each and every Disney Park. At the Baby Care Centers you can warm bottles, change diapers and clothing, nurse in privet and just find a quiet place rest.

While traveling around the parks you will find many rides your little bundle of joy can’t go on. You have a choice. You can skip the attractions all together or do child swap. One parent stays with the child while the other rides. This works really well if you have an extra family member or two come along. One parent can wait with the child, the other rides the attraction. When they return the parent that wait hands the child over to another family member and the parents can go ride the attraction together.

While at the parks look for quiet places to let your little one relax for a few. You can find these spots in restaurants and little off the path areas. Just keep your eyes open for an open bench in the shade. If they fall asleep in the stroller so much the better!

When taking a toddler be aware they may be afraid of characters. Please don’t force little ones to get their picture with Mickey if a tall Mouse panics them. Hold them, tell them what will happen before you go up to the character. Let them watch others be close to Mickey and see they are safe. I know you want the cute picture of your tot hugging Mickey and Minnie all smiles but it is not worth making them afraid of the characters for the rest of their lives.

Give your child a chance to rest! Be aware of their physical limitations. Your time will be much more enjoyable if you return to the hotel for a nap and maybe a swim. Be aware of the weather as well. Is it so hot it will tire your kiddo out faster? Are they so cold they are grumpy? Get them comfortable and let them rest. Do not push them further than their little bodies can take. Be aware that their little ears are more sensitive than yours. Is the music and sound effects too loud for them? Bring cotton to put in their ears or some other type of ear protection. Make sure they have shade in their stroller to protect them from the sun and bring sunscreen for them. Make sure you have plenty of the food and drinks they enjoy.

Adults and other kids think of all of Disney Parks as giant playground. Smaller children get bored easy. Make sure you give them time to play and run around. Little ones that are learning how to crawl or walk need the time and space to practice. Let them out and about some. Bring some toys, books, blankie or other comfort item. This is especially true if the child is ADHD or has other special needs. There are places at the parks and hotels to let a child be a child. Tom Sawyers Island and Challenge Trail are just two of the spots at the Disneyland Resort. Every park has several areas for kids to let of pent up energy. It is up to you to make sure it happens.

The most important this is ENJOY!! You are there to walk in Walt Disney’s Dream of having a place where families can “play” together! Just do what is natural and right for your family and if that means only spending a few hours a day in the park and heading back to the hotel then it is worth it.

What is Disney’s DAS and how does it help?

What is Disney’s DAS and how does it help?
Doing Disney with Disabilities

The Disney DAS (Disability Access System) is how Disney helps those with disabilities enjoy the parks.

Let’s start off with what it is not. DAS is not a front of the line pass for anybody with any disability. A DAS Card is not issued to all disabled guests. It is not for all guests with mobility issues.

What is DAS? It is a Fastpass type return system for guests with disability limitations that make it difficult for them to be in long lines. For example the DAS system is for guests (young or old) that have cognitive disabilities such as ADHD, Autism and Traumatic (or other types) Brain Injury. If a person gets overly nervous or upset in lines then a DAS Card can truly save the day. It is good for the guest with disabilities and those in their party as long as the person that the DAS card is issued too rides the attraction with the party. You can only have ONE Return Time at a time. Once you use the Return Time you can get another.

So what do you do if you have mobility issues? You may not need to get a DAS Card. Instead just go into the regular queues for all rides. All lines at Walt Disney World parks and at Disneyland Resorts Disney California Adventure are designed to accommodate wheelchairs and ECVs. Disneyland Park has many lines that are NOT equipped to handle wheelchairs and ECVs. There are special secondary lines for wheelchairs and ECVs at Disneyland. My recommendation for those with mobility issues is take advantage of the regular Fastpass and Fastpass+ Systems. Have family and friends go to get passes is possible so you don’t have to wheel around the parks.

The exception to the above statement about mobility issues is Disneyland Park. Built before the days of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) many of the queues do not accommodate wheelchairs and ECVs. They have secondary lines for those with mobility issues and you can get a DAS card to use for those attractions. Some secondary queues do not require a DAS. It is still NOT a front of the line pass and many of the wheelchair lines are longer than the normal standby line. Not all attractions at the Disneyland Resort use a DAS Card for mobility issues. This is especially true for Pirates of the Caribbean and Space Mountain.

So how do you get and use the DAS? Go into any of the Guest Relation buildings at any of the Disney Parks and request one. You will need to discuss your needs with the Cast Member at Guest Relations. They will not look at Doctors notes or medical records so you don’t need to bring them. You just need to tell them why you need it. I’ll be honest if you have ADHD or some other issue that makes it hard for you to stand in long lines let go of some of your emotion control and let them see what might happen if you lose it. Don’t get upset or rude. Just let them see your disability for what it is. DAS cards can be issued for the guest and their party, up to 4 people total on just the word of the guest getting the DAS. For groups over 4 the entire group needs to go to Guest Relations and show the Cast Member how many people are in the party.

You will get to pick your first Return Time for the first ride at Guest Relations. At Walt Disney World the DAS works just like the regular Fastpass. You or a family member takes the DAS card to the ride you wish to go on and obtains a return time.

At the Disneyland Resort there are 10 locations, 5 in each park where you can obtain a return time. You can go to Guest Relations any time to get a return time or to any of the locations in the parks. For Disneyland they are at the City Hall, Central Hub, Fantasyland, Tomorrowland and New Orleans Square. In Disney California Adventure (DCA) Chamber of Commerce, Carthay Circle, entrance to Cars Land, Bugs Land and Paradise Pier.

To use your DAS Card go to the Fastpass Entrance or the Alternate Entrance if you use a wheelchair or ECV. There you can show your DAS card and enter the line. At some point during the ride they will cross out your Return Time so you can get another.

If at any time you find that the DAS Card is not meeting your need go and talk to Guest Relations. Some people with cognitive disabilities have a harder time than others with lines. Disney is committed to assisting those with Disabilities but, Disney can’t help you if you don’t talk to them.

Disney Parks with Visual Disabilities

Disney Parks with Visual Disabilities

Disney Parks are so visual how can you enjoy them with visual disabilities? Well, you can! Disney has assistance for those with many different kinds of disabilities, including visual disabilities.

For those with visual disabilities Disney Parks has a limited number of Braille Guide Books and Audio Description devices you can use. There are also large stationary Braille maps available at several locations in all parks. Both the Braille Guide book and Audio Description device are available at Guest Relations at any of the parks. They are free to use but there is a $25 refundable deposit. You must return the device or map book on the same day for a refund.

Braille Guidebooks are available for each theme park and include attraction, restaurant and store descriptions.

The Audio Description device will describe some attractions as you ride them. The Audio Description device also describes some outdoor locations as well.

Here is a list of the attractions at the Disneyland Resort that make use of the device:
Alice in Wonderland
Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters
Captain EO
Disneyland Monorail
Disneyland Railroad
Enchanted Tiki Room
Fantasmic!
Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage
Haunted Mansion
“It’s a Small World”
It’s Tough to be a Bug!
The Little Mermaid – Ariel’s Undersea Adventure
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
Monster’s Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue!
Muppet*Vision 3D
Mr. Toads Wild Ride
Peter Pan’s Flight
Pinocchio’s Daring Journey
Pirates of the Caribbean
Snow White’s Scary Adventures
Storybook Land Canal Boats
Turtle Talk with Crush
World of Color

Trained service animals are always welcomed at Disney Parks. They must be kept on leash or in harness at all times. There are many locations where you can take your animal to relieve themselves. The service animal relief areas are marked on the map but any open “grassy” area is available for use as long as you clean up after them. Characters are more than happy to take pictures with service animals.

Service animals may not accompany their owners on some attractions. This is for the animal’s safety as well as the safety of guests on the attraction. When a service animal can’t go with their partner they must be held by a person accompanying the owner/guest. Disney Cast Members may not hold the animal. At the Disneyland Resort there are portable kennels (cages) at major attractions that cannot accommodate the animal. If there is not one at the attraction you wish to ride ask and one will be brought. This is only for the use of the guest while on that particular attraction. This allows all the members of the party to ride together. At this time Disney does not have the portable kennels at Walt Disney World. At Walt Disney World you do a switch where one person rides while the other holds the animal. When the first person has ridden the attraction the second person will go on the attraction without further waiting. This works just like the Child Swap.

Disney Can't Fix What They Don't Know is Broke!

Disney Can’t Fix What They Don’t Know is Broke!

I’ve seen a couple of reviews of the Disney Magic’s first cruise after her Re-Imagining. Now I was not lucky enough to go on this 2 day to nowhere in particular cruise so let me share what I’ve heard.

There have been glowing reviews of the changes made on the pool deck with the addition of the new AquaDunk, new slide and pools along with changes to the restaurant there from Topsiders to Cabanas. The new lounge area has gotten rave reviews as well for theming and fun. The re-theming of Parrot’s Cay to Carioca’s has been praised with people liking the new menu. The Kids Clubs have also been praised and reports say kids are really enjoying the new adventures to be had there. Even the shops had good reviews with the exception of stating that there seemed to be a lack of items. Stock did not seem to arrive in time even with the delay in the first sailing.

The fact that at the Port of Miami you enter the ship through Deck 4 instead of the usual Atrium Lobby of Deck 3 was an issue. Seems the Deck 4 entry area shows rust and was dirty. This was shocking to past cruisers that were used to being wowed when they came onto the ship.

Public areas not on the list of things changed, such as the Promenade Lounge have been reported to be in bad repair, faded and even ripped seating etc. . . Seems the entire ship did not get a good looking over.

Disney said that the staterooms were re-imagined during the dry dock. Carpets and some furniture was changed as was the linen. Some people reported a layer of construction dust on all surfaces in their cabin and in their closet along with missing handles on new night stands. It was stated if you had electricity, working toilet, hot water and A/C you were lucky. Some cabins had 1 or more of the above not working! There are pictures showing that a cabins Navigator Veranda was in very bad repair. It had obviously not been stripped and repainted, wood on the veranda was rotten and things were missing!

This is all shocking to hear about a Disney Cruise Ship! Now I’ve heard from people that sailed on the new ships that there have been issues there as well, mostly problems with service and un-Disney type attitudes from crew.

So what should you do when you have a bad experience either on a Disney Cruise or at a Disney Park? My response and experience says report it to Disney! Here are the steps!

·        Understand that any company, including Disney cannot fix what they don’t know is broken! Tell them what happened! If it is not life threatening stay calm and figure they just missed it and you are helping them.

·        Try to solve the problem when it happens. Report it to the people in charge of the area and if that does not does not get a satisfactory response go above that level. Go to Guest Relations if needed.

·        If not satisfied with Guest Relations response, once you leave call and write a letter to the Cruise Line (or park) discussing your concerns. Kept it clear and as free of emotions as you can. State what happened and how you feel it could be fixed. Tell them how it affected your time there.

·        Understand many problems can’t be fixed “overnight”, things take time!

·        Disney Company requires that each letter or email they receive be read and responded to. So WRITE your concerns down!

I have followed these steps and have gotten good results. I’ve seen policies changed after I’ve written a letter. I’m not saying it was “My Letter” that made the difference. My letter along with others let Disney know there was a problem that needed to be fixed. Disney let me know they were appreciative of me letting them know about my concerns.

If you call and write it has more affect than just doing one or the other. If you only have time to do one, write a letter. A written complaint has more weight than just a phone call.

Don’t sit back and think, “Someone has already told Disney about that problem.” or “Disney will not listen to me.” Most people do not step up and report a problem. If more than one person reports a problem it is more likely to get attention and that attention will come quicker. Mostly I want to say Disney does listen! You may need to write several letters but do try! At least you know you did the right thing reporting the problem!

Here is a link to a blog that has a good balanced review of the Magic’s sailing:
