Go Off-Roading with New Vehicles for Cars Ride

Go Off-Roading with New Vehicles for Cars Ride

By Disney Destinations March 8th, 2025

Life is an off-road rally race, and Lightning McQueen, Mater, and the rest of the Cars from Pixar Animation Studios’ Cars are going to ride it all night long.

First announced at last year’s D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, and brand-new Cars themed area is speeding in to Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World. Here, the Cars crew leaves Radiator Springs behind and heads off into the frontier to put their wheels to the test.

Now at The Future of World-Building at Disney panel at SXSW, Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Doctor, and Imagineer Michael Hundgen teased that guests will need to strap in because they’re in the process of creating a new type of ride vehicle for this experience.

“Our primary goal is creating an emotional experience for our guests,” Hundgen told the crowd. “For this Cars attraction we need to invent a new type of ride vehicle. No one builds these in a factory because it has to do so much more than just carrying you from one place to another. We have to create a car that conveys a feeling when you ride it.”

The team took a trip out to the Arizona desert to jump in a real off-road vehicle to see what it felt like driving over the rocky terrain. These are all things Lightning McQueen and Mater haven’t experienced before like racing over rocky terrain, ascending to mountain peaks, and dodging around geysers – how do you take these real-world elements and put a Cars spin on it?

From there, the Imagineers worked with a motocross company to build a real dirt track to race around on and took that data back to begin working on creating how the ride vehicles will eventually move and race.

“We’re using a customized production vehicle,” Hundgen continued. “It has sensors all over it, and we’re taking it for test drives on our dirt track to gather data on how the vehicle responds to different terrain. This is where we turn that feeling we want into real-world engineering,” Michael explained.

But all this talk about cars, what do they look like?

That’s where the Pixar team steps in. for some show and tell to get the crowd revved up, Doctor shared some early concept sketches with the audience, teasing that they’re creating “new race car personalities for this attraction. Each vehicle in the ride will have its own name and number, just like a real reace.”

Luigi’s Flying Tires Reworked

Luigi’s Flying Tires Reworked

Luigi’s Flying Tires is one of the new rides in Cars Land at Disney California Adventure. Luigi’s is a reworking of the short lived Flying Saucers of Disneyland’s early years.
The Flying Saucers did not last long at Disneyland because of maintenance problems, ride load time and slower than desired movement of the saucers. It was thought that these concerns had been addressed and corrected with the design of Luigi’s Flying Tires. Sadly, during early play testing it was found that the joystick ride control was confusing for the average rider. The joystick spin control was disabled and the joystick removed. Instead of a joystick guests are instructed to lean in the direction they wished the tire to go. Even with these changes there is still some confusion and problems with the ride.
When Luigi’s Flying Tires opened, June, 2012 with much fanfare there were beach balls in with the tires to add color and energy to the attraction. From the very beginning there were three concerns about the attraction. First, the tires did not fly with the speed or ease of control that guests had anticipated. Second, some guests (usually teenagers) would get over excited when throwing the beach balls, tossing them too hard and causing discomfort for guests that were hit in the back of the head and neck. Thirdly, guess slowing down to pick up the beach balls as they loaded the ride slowed down loading of the ride. For the next three months Imagineers and management worked on correcting the problems.

The problems caused by the beach balls were the easiest to correct by simply removing the beach balls. This protected guests from over exuberant teenagers and sped up the loading of the ride. After the beach balls were removed engineers went in and removed the unused spin control that had been left in the tires after being disabled when the ride was reworked before the original opening. The removal of the spin control from all the tires was finished mid-September, 2012.The removal of this piece of equipment lessened the weight of each tire, increasing speed and making it easier to control.
While this is still not one of my most favorite rides in the park I enjoy it and find it a perfect addition to Cars Land. It is also a good ride to take younger children who are too small to ride Radiator Springs Racers on while other family members ride Radiator Springs Racers.
While some may find it a reworking of a failed ride of the past that should be removed, I think it is a good ride and should be kept for future guests to enjoy. It may be possible with future adaptations to speed up the ride and make it easier to control the tires. I look forward to seeing what changes may come to the Luigi’s Flying Tires in the future.

Stanley Claus is in Radiator Sprints!!

Stanley Claus is in Radiator Springs!!

We all know the attention to detail Disney takes when decorating. Well, I believe they have gone over the top this year when decorating for Christmas!

Stanley Steamer has a place of honor in Radiator Springs. A beautiful bronze statue of Stanley sits in front of the garage at the end of Radiator Springs just before the turn to Radiator Springs Racers. His water fountain is always running so you can fill your radiator.

Stanley’s statue was removed and replaced with a special Christmas version! Stanley’s Christmas bronze likeness has a Santa Hat and Santa’s Bag is on his bed! Beside this festive statue is a large Christmas tree decorated with hub cabs.
If you get a chance stop by and say hi to Stanley this Christmas!

Cars Land ~ Seasons Speeding!

Cars Land ~ Seasons Speeding!

Since the opening of Disney California Adventure they have never decorated much for Christmas. It never reached the beauty or intensity of Disneyland. This year things have changed! The entire park is decorated to the max!

Disney went over the top with decorations in Cars Land. The decorations are themed to fit with the area. It is not just a Christmas Tree here, a star there or a string of Garland around.

Each ride, restaurant and shop has a Christmas tree. Each tree is themed to the location.

The Garland is made of ‘Air Filters’ and ‘Tires’.

They even put Santa Hat on the statue of Stanly Steamer! (It is actually an entirely new statue made just for the holidays.)

I’ve not yet had the chance to see this area at night with all the lights on but hope too soon. Keep coming back and checking and I’ll post pictures from there.

Disney California Adventure Full of Hopes and Dreams

Disney California Adventure Full of Hopes and Dreams

The new DCA is full of hopes and dreams. For the Disney Company the hopes and dreams are that the potential of the park if finally realized. This park has been almost empty since it opened and now finally it is finding its fans.

From the moment you enter the park there is an energy and excitement. From the clang of the Red Car Trollies bell and the flashing of the Wig Wag to the music of the various music groups around the park the place is jumping!

A good example of the new energy and expression of the hope and dream is the Red Car Trolley News Boys show. It is all about showing up and trying. Coming into town with nothing but a suitcase and a dream is Mickey Mouse in his classic 1920’s attire.

Mickey is Walt in this wonderful playful show that expresses the hopefulness and enthusiasm that Walt had when he arrived in Hollywood, Ca in the 1920s with nothing more than a suitcase full of dreams.

While some may think the music is from the 1920’s or 30’s it is not. The music is loosely based on the style of music of that time. Some of the songs are from that era but have been updated. It is more upbeat and also has a modern feel while keeping the flavor of the era it is representing. Watch your schedule for this fantastic show.

Even the “police” on Buena Vista Street are positive! Officer Blue is on patrol watching for people doing good! He is looking for people holding doors for others, “operating” a stroller with politeness and even eating neatly. If he catches you in the act he will write you a ticket! Make sure you take it to the Chamber of Commerce to “pay” your fine!

The positivity does not stop at the end of Buena Vista Street. Follow the White Rabbit down the rabbit hole and over to Hollywood Land and the Mad Hatter’s Tea party! This is a Rave style dance street party with live music and bright flashing lights. Paradise Gardens has a band stand with live music throughout the day. It might be the Ellis Island Boys or Sligo Rag playing. You can’t find out who is playing there until you get there but all the bands are fun. Pacific Warf has live music as well with the Mariachi Deva’s and other groups.

Cars Land has its own excitement! DJ the car comes out with dancers and puts on a show throughout the day. Red waters the flowers and gets guests wet while they get their pictures taken with them. All of Cars Land is revved up and ready to roll!

No matter where you are in DCA you can feel the excitement and energy.

Hidden Mickeys, Another Hidden Character and Other Fun of Cars Land

Hidden Mickeys, Another Hidden Character and Other Fun of Cars Land

Ok I know I’ve talked about the Hidden Mickeys in the car hoods on display at Ramon’s House of Body Art. Wait there is MORE!! Here is a link to my article on the car hoods if you wish to check it out.

I found out there were more in there after writing that article! There are 19 or 20 hidden Mickeys just in Ramon’s House of Body Art! First you need to check out all the car hoods on display inside and out. Then go into the two smaller rooms next to each of the shops doors. Inside each room you will find 6 hidden Mickeys! There are in the same place in each room. 4 in each small room is obvious while 2 others are more difficult to see. Look in the ‘Pin Striping’ on the shelves for the main 4. The other 2 are in spatter art boxes used to display items on the shelves.
Hint ~ Check the inside of the lid!

Radiator Springs Curios has 2 Hidden Mickeys, 1 outside and 1 inside. The one outside is on the front wall on the left side of the porch down low. The other is inside near the cashier.

Walk down Rout 66 and stand in front of the statue of Stanly Steamer, look to the left and up at the power lines. SMILE you just found a hidden Mickey!

In the office of the Cozy Cone Motel there is someone hiding! Go to the back of the office and look in the window at the desk. Look at the beautiful display of curios for sell. See the cute little miniature Cozy Cones? WAIT!! Who is that peeking out from under one of the cones! Oh My! Buzz Lightyear in Cars Land? Who would have thought to look for him in Cars Land?

I was talking to Filmore while getting some organic fuel. He asked me to look at the signal; he thinks every 3rd light is longer! I think he is right! Check it out for yourself!
