Simple Price Comparison Between Disneyland and Disney Cruise Line

Simple Price Comparison Between Disneyland and Disney Cruise Line

This information is for everyone but, it is particularly for those living in the So Cal area who love Disneyland. I wanted to give you a heads up for late 2027 and beyond when DCL will have a ship or two here.

Admittedly these trips are not at the same time, but it is a straightforward, simple comparison between 2 different 5-Night Disney vacations. Both are for 2 adults. A Disney Cruise is more expensive . . . right???

Choice 1, Disneyland:

Disneyland 5-Night, 4-Day Park Hopper Ticket with Lightning Lane Multi Pass (with Disneyland Anniversary Discount Ticket Offer), staying at Pixar Place Hotel, Standard View room. This is in July 2025. Total package cost $4,321.56. This offer does not include food or other extra entertainment, like park tours or character dining.

Choice 2, Disney Cruise on the Disney Wonder:

5-Night, total price $3,302.86. This is a Category 05A Oceanview with Veranda. This is a much higher room level. It would be equivalent to a preferred view. Meals are included as is character dining at some select Main Dining Restaurants during dinner. 2 of the Main Restaurants have dinner shows on the Wonder. There are 3 Broadway caliber shows, Pirate Night deck party with fireworks at sea, character meet and greets and MORE. This cruise is in April 2026. The only thing not added to this cost is a pre-cruise hotel. You should get that but it can be $150-$500, depending on where you like to stay. Not enough to truly tip the scales away from DCL. Remember you pay for food at DLR!

That is a $1,018.70 difference without adding the cost of food and drinks you need to purchase while in the park. Food alone could add another $150+ per day (Double that if your booking character dining.) for 3 meals and snacks. That would be another $600+. That does not include any higher-end meals or character dining. DCL includes snacks and even all the Mickey Bars you wish to eat!

If you are limited on funds reconsider the cost of a Disney Cruise. You get more value for your vacation dollar! The experience is different between the park and Cruise. You can pinch for the parks and bring the price down. To cut cost on a DLR stay consider a Good Neighbor or Neighboring Hotel instead of staying on property. You can bring or purchase outside the parks snacks to eat in the park. Skipping meals, sharing or not going to any sit-down or character meals will save. You might be able to get the price close to DCL. But what are you missing?

Would you enjoy a fine dining experience every night, at no extra cost? How about all the free soda, regular coffee, tea, milk, juice, hot coco and even cold water you want. Bring a travel mug or water bottle to refill at the drink station! Would you enjoy walking up to quick service and the buffet location and getting all you want to eat, there is no additional cost? Would you feel special walking into a restaurant every night and the servers know your name, table number and what you usually enjoy drinking when you sit down? How about you want more food at dinner? Just ask! Seconds of what you had or something else entirely it is free, food is included! That is the DCL diferance!

The parks are WONDERFUL and amazing to experience. Every Disney fan should do the parks!! You can do the parks on a budget. But would you like to be completely spoiled on vacation? Try a Disney Cruise!!

Why Use a Travel Agent to Book Your Disney Vacation? Why Use Pixie Dusted Memories Travel?

Why Use a Travel Agent to Book Your Disney Vacation?

Why Use Pixie Dusted Memories Travel?

The internet has made it easy to book your own vacation. You can even just call any Disney Park or the Cruise Line and book your vacation yourself. So why use a Travel Agent? There are many good agents and agencies out there. Find one that feel right for you.

First off you should find an agent who has specifically trained for Disney. They should be able to show you their College of Disney Knowledge Certification if asked. This training is covers every Disney Destination you can think of. You will have access to a wealth of knowledge by going with a Disney specialist. If it is your first time they can tell you the ins and outs of the destination.

Disney sometimes has discounts, free dining or other offers. Travel Agents are notified of these and can apply them, sometimes even after you have already booked. Travel Agents are aware of other ways to save a money and will assist. A great example is using Discounted Disney Gift Cards to pay for your vacation. Another way to save money is when you book and when you travel. Agents see the prices and how they change. They can also offer their experience on when pricing is lowest for where you wish to go.

Besides saving money a Travel Agent can help you understand what you may need to bring on your vacation. Are you cruising? Do you need a passport? What about Trip Insurance? Land or Sea considering Trip Insurance or Trip Protection is important. What does it cover? When do you purchase it? What are the risks of not purchasing?

What happens if something goes wrong and you cannot go on vacatin? Do you know the cancelation policy of your vacation destination? How do you get a refund? What if something goes wrong on the trip? Were you disappointed in the service or quality of the experience? Were there issues with your room? A Travel Agent can help you figure out how to talk to Disney to get assistance.

Do you need help with accessible accommodation? Do you need information on a destination and what is available for YOU with your accessible needs? A Travel Agent you specializes in Accessibility can be a great asset! Pixie Dusted Memories Travel does this!

Here is a big reason to consider using a Travel Agent. It is YOUR time and stress level. When new itineraries for Disney Cruise Line or Booking Opens for new dates at the Parks or Resorts the phone lines get overloaded. There can be a one to four hour plus hold before you can talk to someone to book your trip or make a modification/payment on an existing vacation not in the new booking time frame. Do you want to be on the phone stressing about making your Advanced Dining Reservations, Booking Port and Shipboard Adventures or adding special magic to your vacation? Would it not be wonderful to turn that over to someone else to handle for you? A Travel Agent does the work so you can PLAY!!

The best thing about the majority of Travel Agents that book Disney is there is no fee!! The first thing to ask any Travel Agent is do you charge any fees! The answer should be NO! Travel Agents get paid by commission. That commission is built into the price of the vacation. It does not matter if you book with a Travel Agent or directly with Disney, YOU pay that commission! The total will be the same for the exact same booking. Why not let someone else do the work for you?

We are Pixie Dusted Memories Travel. We do not charge any fees for our travel-related services. We do the work so you can play. We are here to answer any questions you may have. We will watch for special discounts that we may apply to any reservation you book with us.

Walt Disney Audio-Animatronic - My Thoughts

Walt Disney Audio-Animatronic - My Thoughts

While I find the concept of seeing Walt Disney in a lifelike form interesting, I also find it creepy and disrespectful. I have multiple feelings about this project.

First off I think it is disrespectful to Walt’s memory and his family. In fact I know that his family is upset by this development. Here is a post from Walt’s granddaughter, Joanna Miller.

Everyone PLEASE STOP THE MADNESS>>>Do not let them turn Grampa into a ROBOT!…………..My Mom tried to stop this years ago and they respected her wishes. There is plenty of film so people can see him and hear him talk. He has told you everything on TV show lead ins and specials. EVERYONE WHO STEPPED FORWARD when Uncle Robert’s House was going to be destroyed and YOU DID IT . Thank you we have that protected because of all of you. Please help protect the memory and legacy of GRAMPA.

From the personal Facebook page of Joanna Miller

I will add my voice to Joanna’s and stand with the Disney Family on this. When I say I’m standing with the family I am saying this because Joanna Miller is the eldest granddaughter of Walt. She iss passionate in keeping the memory of Walt alive and honored. She is passionate about keeping his memory alive and stopping misinformation about her grandpa..

What can you do? Write Disney Corporate and Disneyland! Let your voice be heard. Share the pain this is causing the Disney Family.

The other thing that upsets me is displacing the Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln. Walt wanted to keep his memory alive. Disney Corporate is doing a lot to take away American History that Walt put into the park. If you truly wish to honor Walt, then maintain that history! In fact, add more!

Disney Education? Yes PLEASE!!! ~ Disney Imagination Campus

Disney Education? Yes PLEASE!!!

~ Disney Imagination Campus ~

Walt Disney once said, "You can not entertain without educating. You can't educate without entertaining." He believed in something he called Edutainment. The combination of Education and Entertainment.

Disney Imagination Campus is at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts. So what is Disney Imagination Campus?

There are 4 different education programs in the Disney Imagination Campus.

  • Performing Arts
    • Performing groups will receive the rare opportunity to hone their craft while learning from real working Disney professionals and perform on Disney stages.
  • Arts & Humanities
    • Students will solve a real-world challenge around the design of one of our theme park’s lands, areas, or attractions as it relates to storytelling.
  • Science & Technology
    • Students will use scientific principles such as gravity, force, and peed to understand how these principles apply to the design of new and classic Disney theme park attractions.
  • Leadership & Innovation
    • Students will discover how to become future leaders by developing a common passion for knowledge, global vision and innovation.

Along with the classes Disney allows the group to purchase theme park tickets at a discount.

Do you have a class, youth group, choir, band, or club that could benefit from this program? Let us know and we will help you book it!

Disney uses their curriculum and learning environment to foster creative thinking, fearless exploration and Disney Magic. The mission is to provide students with tools they need to express themselves creatively and academically and prepare them for real-world challenges.

Disability Access System – DAS

 Disability Access System – DAS

DAS is the Disability Access System available at the Disney Parks. This system is not a one size fits all or a front of the line pass. PLEASE do NOT ask for or get a DAS Pass just to cut the lines. Abuse of the system makes it hard for all of those who really need it.

There are two ways to get your DAS Pass:

1.       You can either go to the DLR app or to your WDW My Disney Experience App and do a Online Video Chat with a Cast Member between 2-30 days prior to your arrival. If you sign up Online you will get 2 return times for the first day. You can pick 2 attractions to ride on when you get there!

2.       You can go to Guest Services (either at the Guest Services Building or at a Guest Services Umbrella placed throughout the parks) and talk to a Cast Member and get your DAS Pass.

Y    Once you have ridden your chosen attraction you can either return to Guest Services to obtain your next return time or you can get a new return time in the App!

What does DAS do for your special need.

DAS is not a go to the head of the line pass. For all special needs you will be given a return time to ride the attraction. You will return at or after your return time, show your DAS Pass Return Time on your App and enter the Lighting Lane. The wait time from there is usually 15-20 minutes.

Cognitive Issues:

This includes ADHD, Autism, Traumatic Brain Damage, Behavioral Issues, any issue that makes long lines impossible. (PLEASE do NOT use this unless you really need it.)

Mobility Issues:

The DAS system is not that big a help for those with mobility issues, it does allow you to have an accommodating access if a wheelchair does not fit in the line or there are steps involved.

All lines at WDW are wheelchair accessible. Many of the lines at DLR are accessible and those that are not accessible have an alternative entrance. You will get the DAS to obtain a return time or speak to a CM at Guest Relations or at the attraction.

Wheelchair and ECV rental is available at the parks or you can bring your own.

Hearing Impairment:

If you have hearing impairment you can get an assisted listening device or portable live caption. Disney Parks also have ASL interpreters available. You can check showtimes for live shows to see what showing has an ASL interpreter. Just tell the Cast Member when you arrive at the show that you need to be where you can see the ASL interpreter.

Visual Impairment:

Disney Parks has multiple ways of assisting those with Visual Impairment:

Service Animals are allowed in the parks.*

Audio Description Device is available to use with a refundable deposit.

Braille Guidebooks is available to use with a refundable deposit.

Portable Tactile Map Book is available to use with a refundable deposit.

Stationary Braille Maps.

*Service Animals are allowed in the parks:

You must be able to leave your dog while riding on some attractions. Either a person traveling with you needs to hold your dog or they must be crated. Cast Members are not allowed to hold your dog. There are crates available to leave your animal in while riding an attraction.

There are Service Animal Relief areas around the parks. You are responsible for cleaning up after your animal.

Disney Genie+ Service and 2023 Theme Park Tickets & Resort Bookings Update for Walt Disney World Resort

Disney Genie+ Service and 2023 Theme Park Tickets & Resort Bookings

Update for Walt Disney World Resort

Disney has released an update about the Disney Genie+ program at Walt Disney World. These changes do not affect guests at the Disneyland Resort.

Because Disney Genie+ is very popular at Walt Disney World. It is in such high demand amongst guests that Walt Disney World Resort is making changes to the program.

Starting June 8th, Disney Genie+ will only be offered through the My Disney Experience App ON THE DAY OF VISIT – Disney will no longer offer the option to purchase Genie+ pre-arrival as a ticket add-on for dates remaining in 2022 and 2023.

This means ALL guests, no matter the ticket type will now purchase Disney Genie+ on the day of their visit via the My Disney Experience App, one day at a time, subject to availability.

Disney expects that, on average, guests who purchase Disney Genie+ service will continue to enter 2-3 attractions or experiences each day using the Lightning Lane entrance when the first selection is made early in the day.

If you have already purchased a ticket or package that includes Disney Genie+ service for dates later in 2022, the service WILL be honored during your visit!

Additionally, Walt Disney World Resort theme park tickets, Disney Resort Hotel stays and packages for visits in 2023 will also open booking beginning June 8th! More information on 2023 packages and ticket product will be released soon!

Early Theme Park Entry benefit for Resort Hotel guests will continue throughout all of 2023, giving Resort guests the first chance to enjoy select attractions at every theme park, every day (valid admission, park reservation and Resort ID required).

Do you want to book a Disney Vacation? Let me know!

Changes to the DAS (Disability Access System) at the Disneyland Resort

Changes to the DAS (Disability Access System) at the Disneyland Resort
11/19/2014

First off what is DAS. DAS is the system at the Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts intended to help Guests whose disability prevents them from waiting in a conventional queue environment. It is not intended for those with mobility issues only. Those with mobility issues in wheelchairs and ECVs will go into regular Standby Lines where the lines can accommodate and into special lines where they don’t. Everybody can use the FastPass and FastPass+ systems. (Note: Disneyland was built before the ADA laws so some lines do not accommodate wheelchairs or ECVs and Disney has long had policies in place to accommodate. Disney California Adventure is ADA compliant so lines there will accommodate wheelchairs or ECVs.)

Who will this help? It will help those with cognitive and behavioral disabilities or those physical disabilities that make confined spaces or long periods of confinement hard. Some examples are Autism, ADHD, Anxiety, Brain Injury and PTSD. If the person has a medical condition of any kind that makes it so they legitimately can’t cope for the length of time it takes to do a regular stand by line ask at Guest Relations about the DAS.

How do you get a DAS? Stop by City Hall or the Chamber of Commerce at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure and discuss your needs with the Cast Member there. Take the Tickets or Annual Passes for everybody in your group when you talk to them. They will give you the appropriate level of help. They do not need or want a doctors not or proof of disability. They will fill out a form explaining your needs and take your picture. They will then link your DAS with your Ticket or Annual Pass. (Before they use to print up a paper card. This system is new as of 11/19/14.) It will be good for the length of stay or a maximum of 60 days.

When discussing your need of a DAS with the Cast Member remember that mobility issues alone will not qualify you for the DAS. You must tell them why you can’t stay in a long line. If you can’t stand long they will suggest you get a wheelchair or ECV and not give you a DAS. If you can’t do stairs they will say stay in the regular line and tell the Cast Member at the attraction you need to bypass any stairs on entrance or exit. Please do not lie and say you have ADHD or some other issue if you do not to qualify. This just makes it harder for those that really need the help to get it. Be honest and tell them truthfully the legitimate reason you can’t be in line for over 30 minutes or so.

You are only allowed to have one Return Time at a time with DAS. The Return Time is just like a FastPass Return Time. The only difference is a DAS Return time is 10-15 minutes less than the regular Standby Line wait time for the ride you request it for. Example: You ask for Space Mountain as your next Attraction. The Standby Line for Space Mountain is 60 minutes long at that time. Your Return Time will be for 50 minutes from the time issues. You can have only one Return Time at a time. You can use the DAS system in conjunction with the FastPass system. Unlike the FastPass your Return Time for DAS does not expire.

You will pick your first attraction while at Guest Relations getting your DAS and be given a Return Time to ride. After your first ride you can choose your next attraction at any of Kiosks located around both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. Anybody in the party can go to get the Return Time after the DAS is issued. Just take all the tickets for everyone in your group who will be riding that attraction when you go. You can get a Return Time for Attractions in either park from any Kiosk.

The person named on the DAS must ride the attraction for the party to ride. They will be required to show their ticket for the party to ride. You will personally be responsible to keep track of your return time. They will not give you any written reminder. I suggest setting an alarm on your phone or watch, take a pad of paper to write it down, make a note on your phone or send yourself a text with your Attraction and Return Time information.

DAS is good for the guest and up to 5 others or a party of 6. Larger groups can be accommodated but you need to talk to Guest Relations for approval. You can change the number of people in your group at any Kiosk that gives Return Times.

If you are unsure if you need DAS or if you qualify for DAS ask the Cast Member at Guest Relations. If you don’t think the DAS system will give you the assistance you need then tell them what assistance you need and why.

Here is a list of where the Kiosks are at this time:

For more information check out the Disneyland website section on DAS:

After a long conversation with Disney I found out that this same system is going to be implemented at Walt Disney World sometime in the future. The date has not been set as of yet.

What is Disney’s DAS and how does it help?

What is Disney’s DAS and how does it help?
Doing Disney with Disabilities

The Disney DAS (Disability Access System) is how Disney helps those with disabilities enjoy the parks.

Let’s start off with what it is not. DAS is not a front of the line pass for anybody with any disability. A DAS Card is not issued to all disabled guests. It is not for all guests with mobility issues.

What is DAS? It is a Fastpass type return system for guests with disability limitations that make it difficult for them to be in long lines. For example the DAS system is for guests (young or old) that have cognitive disabilities such as ADHD, Autism and Traumatic (or other types) Brain Injury. If a person gets overly nervous or upset in lines then a DAS Card can truly save the day. It is good for the guest with disabilities and those in their party as long as the person that the DAS card is issued too rides the attraction with the party. You can only have ONE Return Time at a time. Once you use the Return Time you can get another.

So what do you do if you have mobility issues? You may not need to get a DAS Card. Instead just go into the regular queues for all rides. All lines at Walt Disney World parks and at Disneyland Resorts Disney California Adventure are designed to accommodate wheelchairs and ECVs. Disneyland Park has many lines that are NOT equipped to handle wheelchairs and ECVs. There are special secondary lines for wheelchairs and ECVs at Disneyland. My recommendation for those with mobility issues is take advantage of the regular Fastpass and Fastpass+ Systems. Have family and friends go to get passes is possible so you don’t have to wheel around the parks.

The exception to the above statement about mobility issues is Disneyland Park. Built before the days of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) many of the queues do not accommodate wheelchairs and ECVs. They have secondary lines for those with mobility issues and you can get a DAS card to use for those attractions. Some secondary queues do not require a DAS. It is still NOT a front of the line pass and many of the wheelchair lines are longer than the normal standby line. Not all attractions at the Disneyland Resort use a DAS Card for mobility issues. This is especially true for Pirates of the Caribbean and Space Mountain.

So how do you get and use the DAS? Go into any of the Guest Relation buildings at any of the Disney Parks and request one. You will need to discuss your needs with the Cast Member at Guest Relations. They will not look at Doctors notes or medical records so you don’t need to bring them. You just need to tell them why you need it. I’ll be honest if you have ADHD or some other issue that makes it hard for you to stand in long lines let go of some of your emotion control and let them see what might happen if you lose it. Don’t get upset or rude. Just let them see your disability for what it is. DAS cards can be issued for the guest and their party, up to 4 people total on just the word of the guest getting the DAS. For groups over 4 the entire group needs to go to Guest Relations and show the Cast Member how many people are in the party.

You will get to pick your first Return Time for the first ride at Guest Relations. At Walt Disney World the DAS works just like the regular Fastpass. You or a family member takes the DAS card to the ride you wish to go on and obtains a return time.

At the Disneyland Resort there are 10 locations, 5 in each park where you can obtain a return time. You can go to Guest Relations any time to get a return time or to any of the locations in the parks. For Disneyland they are at the City Hall, Central Hub, Fantasyland, Tomorrowland and New Orleans Square. In Disney California Adventure (DCA) Chamber of Commerce, Carthay Circle, entrance to Cars Land, Bugs Land and Paradise Pier.

To use your DAS Card go to the Fastpass Entrance or the Alternate Entrance if you use a wheelchair or ECV. There you can show your DAS card and enter the line. At some point during the ride they will cross out your Return Time so you can get another.

If at any time you find that the DAS Card is not meeting your need go and talk to Guest Relations. Some people with cognitive disabilities have a harder time than others with lines. Disney is committed to assisting those with Disabilities but, Disney can’t help you if you don’t talk to them.

Mike Peraza will be at Disneyland for Steampunk Days!

Mike Peraza will be at Disneyland for Steampunk Days!

Mike Peraza is a Disney art director and concept artist who has worked for Walt Disney Feature Animation, Walt Disney Television Animation, Disney Comics, Disney Interactive, WED and Disney Fine Art Galleries.

Some of his past work for Disney includes designing multiplane shots for “The Fox and the Hound”, design and layout work on “Mickey’s Christmas Carol”, “The Great Mouse Detective”, “The Black Cauldron”, “Tron”, “Something Wicked this way Comes”, “Return to OZ”, “Aladdin” and “Beauty and the Beast” for feature films. For Disney TV he worked on “DuckTales”, “Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers”, “TaleSpin”, “Goof Troop” and “Darkwing Duck”.

Now that I’ve told you about Mike Peraza let me explain Steampunk if you have never heard of it before. Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery. This is often sent in an alternative history of the 19th century’s British Victorian era or the American Wild West. Shows like Wild Wild West fit into the Steampunk genre as do the works of Jules Vern, H. G. Wells, Philip Pullman, Scott Westerfield, Stephen Hunt and China Mievill. Steampunk is often a hybrid genre blending Victorian-era faction, art nouveau design and films from the mid-20th century.

On February 22nd, 2014 Mike will be at Disneyland to autograph prints of his original Disney themed Steampunk work. He will be at the Disney Art Gallery on Main Street USA.

Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Holiday Magic Lighting

Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Holiday Magic Lighting

January 6th was the last day for the holiday decorations and shows at the Disneyland Resort. This means that last weekend was the last weekend for Sleeping Beauty’s Castle to be lit up.

Often little kids can’t stay awake late enough to see the fireworks. During the holiday season Disney does a special holiday castle lighting with snow early in the evening. There are actually 2 lighting displays before the evening fireworks each night. They are at 7:30 and 8:30 before the evening fireworks.

Here is my video of the evening castle show done on January 5th, 2014.

Tinder Rides at the Disneyland Resort

Tinder Rides at the Disneyland Resort!

What is a Tinder Ride, you ask? Tinder Ride is a ride on the “Tinder Car” of the train. The Tinder Car is the car directly behind the engine that carries water and fuel.

When Walt Disney designed his original two engines (both built by WED Engineering aka Disney Imagineering) Walt had seats put on the Tinder Cars so he could have his friends and VIP guests ride up there while he drove the trains. Walt loved to show off his trains!

There are still plenty of train enthusiasts that love sitting behind the engineers and watching them drive the powerful locomotive around Disneyland. Disneyland has continued to share Walt’s love of trains with guests by allowing them to ride on the Tinder Cars when it is safe to do so. There are no Tinder Rides when they are refueling, doing a blowdown or during a shift change.

Up until last year only the original trains built by WED had seats on the Tinder Car. You could only ride the Tinder on the #1 C. K. Holiday and the #2 E. P. Ripley locomotives. In 2013 Disneyland altered the Tinder Car on the #4 Earnest S. Marsh locomotive to add one more locomotive for giving Tinder Rides. The #3 Fred Greely and the #5 Ward Kimball still do not have seats on their Tinder Cars and it may not be possible to accommodate seats on them do to the Engine/Tinder car configuration. There is just not enough room between the Engine and Tinder to allow it.

For our anniversary this year we took a Tinder Ride and were excited that the train we got to ride on was the #4 Earnest S. Marsh! We have already ridden on the Tinder Cars of the other 2 trains.

The Tinder on the Earnest S. Marsh is much closer to the engineer than on the Holiday and Ripley. This offers you the chance to have more of a conversation with the engineers as you ride. It is truly an enjoyable experience!

So how do you get a Tinder Ride? Ask! Just go up to the first Conductor you see at the Main Street Train Station and ask if they are doing Tinder Rides that day. The Conductor will check and find out if they are doing them and about how long it will be before you can ride. You may have to sit around the Main Street Station for a couple of hours before you get on. It all depends the needs of the locomotive and engineers. If they need to do a blowdown (let off steam to clear out hard gunky water) you cannot ride for safety reason. If they are refueling you cannot be on the Tinder because of safety concerns. If there is going to be a shift change you can’t ride because they want you to have the continuity of one engineer being your guide. So you may need to wait for the train to go around a couple of times before you get on. Each trip around the park is about 20 minutes. Only two people (or two adults and a small child) can ride the Tinder at a time.

On the Tinder Ride you will hear the history of Disneyland from the view point of the trains circling the park. You will hear why there is a train, how it has changed and how it being there has affected the design of attractions at the edge of the park near the tracks. The engineer will share history and interesting facts about the park and trains. You can also learn about the workings of a steam engine and how it shaped the country. What you hear depends on the questions you ask and the engineer driving the train. It is never exactly the same twice. The Tinder Ride last about 20 minutes or one complete circle of the park. On our last Tinder Ride we asked a lot about the workings of a steam engine and how to drive a locomotive.

Disney "Retires" the Billys, a Piece of Disney Magic Lost

Disney “Retires” the Billys a Piece of Disney Magic Lost

Billy Hill and the Hillbillies has been entertain guests at the Disneyland Park for over 20 years. There unique blend of bluegrass, rock and even classical music with comedy brought smiles to tens of thousands of people to the park over the years.

The humor of the Billys is not for everybody, and those that don’t like it can easily avoid it. Their humor is clean with just enough “adult” content to keep the adults in the audience interested without leaving mom and dad explaining things to the young uns. Kids love the physical slapstick humor and the music captures their minds. This is the type of classic entertainment Walt Disney wanted in his park. It fits in the Golden Horseshoe of Disneyland’s Frontierland perfectly! The Golden Horseshoe was designed with this type of show in mind.

On November 6th, 2013, in the Disney Parks Blog, Disney announced they were going to “Retire” the Billy Hill and the Hillbillies show on January 6th, 2014. Fans of the Billies reacted quickly and decisively. Petitions were set up on line, calls and visits to Disneyland’s Guests relations were made. As of today Disneyland management has not listened to the guests. It is obvious to those of us that have been around the Billys and watch their Facebook page that the boys do not want to retire and love being at Disneyland. The Billys never said anything against Disney’s decision but it is clear they would rather stay.

I’ll not go into details here as I’ve shared the story before. Just let me say the Billys hold a special spot in my heart as they helped me keep my daddy alive for an extra 9 years by giving him something other than the daily pain and disappointment to think about. The Billys gave dad a reason to get out of bed and live. Thank God for the Billys! God Bless them!

Yesterday was the final show of the Billies at Disneyland. The crowds packed out the Big Thunder Ranch stage area and tears were shed as the Billies gave their last performance at Disneyland. Nobody was disappointed at this amazing bands final show.

So what is next for the Billies?? Kirk Wall, one of the founding members of the Billies and other members of the Billies played New Year’s Eve at Knott’s Berry Farm! People flocked to the park to see them. Many people that usually go to Disneyland headed to Knotts to see the Billies perform as Krazy Kirk and the Hillbillies. It is possible the Hillbillies will perform at Knotts instead of Disneyland in the future.

There is still a chance that Disneyland will change their opinion. The amazing show of support by the fans yesterday may make Disneyland Management rethink retiring such an Guest pleasing show! The only way Disney will change their mind is if the fans keep the pressure on. Keep calling and going into City Hall and telling Guest Relations you want the Billys back!

I want Disney to keep the Billys but I want the Billys to be respected! Disney’s first mistake was taking the show from being a free flowing show where the Billys could adapt the show to the guests reactions to a tightly scripted repeating event. It is not as much fun to go see the Billys now that they are forced to sing the same songs in the same order with the same patter.

The second mistake was to put them in the Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree Stage. Yes, there is room for more people to see them but fewer and less comfortable seats. There is little shade and constant distractions from the show. At all times there are characters walking around during the show. Kids see Mickey, Minnie or one of the other characters walking about and they go screaming with joy (as they should). This is ok but distracting to those that came to enjoy the Billys music and humor. Besides the characters there are games and crafts going on. The Disneyland Railroad runs just the other side of a hedge and blows its whistle as it goes past, it does not matter if the show is going on. The train must blow its whistle there for safety purposes.

During the holidays things get even worse. There is the Conjure a Villain Tent behind the audience during Halloween. Every 25-30 minutes there is a great BOOM from the Villain Tent, even during the middle of a show. There is a pumpkin carver and again more games and crafts. Christmas brings Santa along with even more games and crafts!

I say that all the distractions and the poor seating is disrespectful to the guests and the Billys! I believe if Disney will let the Billys go back to the quality show they were doing 3-4 years ago and return them to the Golden Horseshoe where they belong it is a win win for fans, the Billys and Disneyland. If they will not respect the guests and the Billys by allowing the Billys to do what they do best then God bless the Hillbillies wherever they perform! Hopefully Knotts will hire them.

Hidden Mickey Adventures in Disney California Adventure - Games, Quest & Challenges

Hidden Mickey Adventures in Disney California Adventure Games Quests Challenges
By Nancy Temple Rodrigue

Do you go to the Disneyland Resort often? Do you enjoy the rides but wish to have something more to do at the parks? How about a Challenge!! Nancy Temple Rodrigue, author of the Hidden Mickey’s Adventures Novels has got some extra Disney fun!!

Hidden Mickey Adventures Games Quests and Challenges has two versions. There is the Disneyland version (that I do not have yet) and a Disney California Adventure version.  These are fun to do as a group or in teams competing against each other. There are 3 types of things to do in the book.

There are questions things like, “What is the 2nd tip at Luigi’s Flying Tiers. For some of them you need to know a little park history. An example of this is “Wolfgang Puck use to own this.” There are also close up pictures of single letters on signs and you try to find as many of them as possible. You get points for each correct answer in a quest/contest. There are also word searches and crossword puzzles, good for doing while taking a break or standing in line! There are some junior level challenges for kids if they need some easier challenges.

These books make you look at the parks a little differently. Because they ask such specific questions you may be looking more closely at things you just glanced at before. If you don’t know the answer or can’t find something you can always ask a Cast Member. This is a great way to add some fun in a day at the park(s) when you have already gone many times. It is also a good way to learn about the park(s) history and fun details if you have never gone.

All the challenges in the books are designed to be handicapped accessible. There are some places that people with mobility issues can’t go and those are noted in the book. Each quest is marked with notations on handicapped accessibility and level of difficulty.

No matter if you are a first time visitor or an old hand that goes to the park(s) often there is lots of fun to be had in this book and the companion book, “Hidden Mickey Adventures in Disneyland”. Young or old there is some challenge that you can do and something new you may learn.

I’ve done some of the challenges and look forward to completing all of them in time. Looking forward to many fun adventures at Disney California Adventure with this book.

Happy Birthday Walt Disney

Happy Birthday Walt Disney
December 5th, 1901 to December 15th, 1966

Walter Elias Disney was an American Entrepreneur. Many consider him an Entertainment Icon and film maker. Walt Disney was more than just a Motion-Picture, Television producer, Animator and showman.

Walt Disney was a pioneer. One theme kept being repeated in many of the things he said, “Keep Moving Forward!” In other words don’t rest on your laurels and past accomplishments. Instead move forward and do something new and different! Walt did that and made that a company focus.

Besides making the first feature length animated feature, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs he developed new ways of creating his movie magic over the years. From art classes for his animators to new technology such as the Multi-Plane Camera he pioneered new ideas.

After making his money in movies Walt wanted more. He wanted an entertainment venue unlike any other. He wanted a place where families could come together to “play” and spend time together. He envisioned parents doing things with their children not just watching from a bench as he had when his girls were little. Years after the general idea came to him he build Disneyland. Once Disneyland was set and doing well he started working on ideas for a much larger Walt Disney World. He did not get to see WDW finished but his brother did. Roy O Disney, and the company he left behind made sure his ideas came true as always.

So what is so special about this simple man from the farmland of America? He never graduated High School and had no further “formal” education. He dropped out of school at 16 and lied about his age to join the Red Cross as part of the team in Europe at the end of WWI. He started 3 studios that failed and went broke before finally coming to California and starting the Disney Brothers Studio in 1923 at the age of 22.

Walt Disney gave the world memories. From movies that generations can and do enjoy together to “Theme” Parks where families and friends are immersed in a world of Yesterday, Tomorrow and Fantasy. Disney created an empire that continues decades after his death that looks back to his life and focus to “Keep Moving Forward”.

He gave us many wonderful characters to enjoy. He gave us Mickey Mouse to model our lives after, an everyman with a good heart and positive attitude. Goofy with his constant troubles and laughter in response, always the optimist! Donald with his grumpy attitude ready to explode but truly with a heart of gold. Donald teaches us to control our temper and not act like him all the time. All of these and more have been examples for us as children and for our children to model their lives on and learn from.

Walt shared with the world his love for America. He felt as long as America was strong the world would be strong and all would be right. He was not arrogant or rude about it. He did not believe that the world needed to become like America. He loved the differences in cultures and understood that each is precious and needs to be treasured. He just felt that America, as a mix of cultures was the best.

Walt Disney left a legacy that is still going strong today. There have been threats and his family has stood firm to protect it. There have been lies about him and again his family stood up to show people Walt the Man.

Haunted Mansion Holiday

Haunted Mansion Holiday!

For the holidays Jack Skellington, from Nightmare Before Christmas takes over the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland!! The 999 Grim and Grinning Ghosts have been sent on a holiday vacation.

The fun starts outside as you see the mix of Christmas and Halloween decorations that adorn the mansion.  Once inside the stretching room Jack’s touches can be seen. Even in the Art Gallery things are changed with a mixed up holiday theme.

Here is a link to this years Haunted Mansion video. It is not the best as I do not have a camera that works in the dark . . . yet. Hoping for next year.
