Kindness is Magic!
You’re going on vacation. You’re going on a cruise or go to
an amusement park. Crowds are going to be part of the norm. You will have lines
for rides, food and even the bathroom. It is easy to lose patience. Somebody’s
kid, or yours steppes on your toe for the hundredth time while standing in the
same line. The line is sooooo slow! People are leaving huge gaps and you wish
they would just move or they are standing right on top of you! Some people are
cutting in line. That one grabbed the last of the . . ., your favorite from the
Buffett! Ya it is easy to lose it! I beg you please do not. Instead of
screaming and yelling get someone who has authority to do something. Instead of
letting it ruin your day be kind and have courage to do the right thing. Don’t
lose your temper at a little kid. Kindly ask the parents to intervene. Put
someone else between the kid and you for a time. WALK AWAY if you must.
Try something completely different! See that person in a
wheelchair or on a scooter? Let them go ahead! Hold the door. If they seem to
be struggling with carrying things offer to help them carry their food to their
table or merchandise to the sales counter. If they say no thank you, respect that.
Waiting for the elevator on the cruise ship and see them waiting? Don’t be like
others jumping over the wheelchair to get in ahead of them. Block the space and
help them get in! I know people in wheelchairs who missed dinner and shows
because they could not get the elevator. People who could easily take the
stairs refuse to let them go.
If a child is making noise and flapping their arms/hands
turning in circles you stay calm. That child may have autism or some other
issue. Ask the parent if they need help. Do what they ask if you can. They know
their child. If you are in line maybe you can hold their spot so they can take
the child on a little walk if it is going to take a while. See if you can joke
and play a game with them. Talk softly and do not touch them. Do not get in
their space. Help create space for them so they can get control of themselves.
Those with special needs have as much right to enjoy a day
of fun as you do. It may be the only joy they have. They have a hard enough
daily life and need the chance to smile.
Have Courage and be Kind.
Where there is Kindness, they is Goodness,
And where there is Goodness,
There is MAGIC!
