Did You Know Each Disney Ship Has Musical Horns?

Did You Know Each Disney Ship Has Musical Horns?

You know you are on a Disney Cruise or a Disney Ship is in port when you hear a “Foghorn” playing MUSIC!!! There is something magical about the moment you hear that horn! You never forget it and I know I dream about hearing it again.

Starting with the Disney Magic each Disney Ship has had a Musical Horn! There are three different kinds of horns so far.

The Magic/Classic-Class ships, Disney Magic and Disney Wonder have seven compressed air powered Trumplets. These are seven horns that play the first seven notes of the classic “When You Wish Upon a Star.” This is the only song played on the Magic and Wonder. That is the limit of their system. “When You Wish Upon a Star” is also the ship wide announcement chime you hear on the ships when there are announcements. It is fleet wide.

The Dream-Class ships, Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy have Digital Mickey Horns. These digitally create musical sounds that imitate a ships foghorn playing songs.

Disney Dream’s Mickey Horns:

First seven notes of “When You Wish Upon a Star”

Second seven notes of “When You Wish Upon a Star”

First fourteen notes of “When You Wish Upon a Star”

“A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes”

“Yo Ho (A Pirate’s Life for Me)”

“An Actor’s Life for Me from Pinocchio”

There is a Maritime Tradition of ships having foghorn battles. Whatever ship has the deepest, loudest and longest foghorn when they have a Foghorn War wins! They will do this in port or when passing each other at sea. Once Disney ships got going other lines could not win a battle with them! Yes, some other ships have deeper and louder horns. The larger the ship usually the deeper and louder the horn. Disney ships will blow their normal horn (that sounds like a flatulent giant beast) and go back and forth for a while. Then they will pull When You Wish out. The other ships usually capitulate with a quick double short toot.

There are only two reasons any Disney Ship loses a horn battle. The first is if their Musical Horns are damaged. It does happen. We witnessed it once, very sad sound. We got a disjointed sick sounding squeak instead of When You Wish Upon a Star. The second reason a Disney Ship loses is if they are in a battle with a newer Disney Ship. The Magic/Classic-Class ships cannot compete with the Dream or Wish-Class ships. What guests get to witness in the case of a battle between a Classic and a newer ship is a back and forth for fun. Classic will play the first seven notes of When You Wish and the newer will play it back. That can go back and forth a few times and they may even play it in unison! Then the newer ship answers with the second seven notes. It ends when the newer ship plays all fourteen notes and/or adds a new song to the game. At that point the Classic ship has lost and signals defeat with a double short blast.
