Will Real ID be Required to Fly Domestically in the USA?
Starting May 7th, 2025 Real ID is required to enter locations like Government Offices, Court Houses, Army Services Basses there are also comments about Airports and Fly to enter these locations and fly. BUT is it really necessary for flying? The answer is no. If you have a Passport you will not be required to have Real ID to enter an Airport and Fly. I still suggest getting a Real ID because I believe it will make it easier in the long run. You just pull out her Real ID Drivers License and leave your Passport in your bag. Your old style State Issued ID will not work for Flying or Cruising.
So if you are flying to your favorite vacation destination,
amusement park or other, I recommend you look at the TSA website and make sure
what your local airport requires.
Are you going on a cruise? If it is a Closed Loop Cruise your
State Issued Real ID and your Birth Certificate is all you legally are “required”
to show when boarding. A Closed Loop Cruise is a cruise that starts and ends at
the same US Port. You may still want to have a Passport Book (not the Passport
Card) in case of an emergency that requires you fly home from another country. Passports
are required when flying between the US and another Country, this rule is the
same for all countries including the Caribbeans, Canada and Mexico.
A Passport Card is only good for going by Cruise Ship, Car,
Train, Foot, Train or other form of public ground transportation. You can not
fly with a Passport Card.
It is always my suggestion to have both Real ID and a
Passport Book when traveling.
