Review of: Tales from Terri A Disney Sculptor’s Life, Volume 1

Review of: Tales from Terri A Disney Sculptor’s Life, Volume 1
By Terri Hardin

Terri Hardin has had a rich and rewarding live as a puppeteer, artist, Disney Imagineer and Disney Collectable Sculptor. In her book, ”Tales from Terri A Disney Sculptor’s Live, Volume 1” she shares some of her adventure as an artist and how she came to work for Disney.

What I love about this book most of all it is it encourages you to be creative. She tells you to go out and try. Her business cards are inspiration cards not just a way to share her business contact information.

After telling you how she walked a Disneyland park attraction to work on her concept for a collectable piece she asks you to make a list of what characters in that attraction you would like to see. She asks you to tell her what you would like to see them doing. She even suggests you draw it, stick figures acceptable!

I love how she relates her grandfather’s advice, “All men must work for a living. However, a wise man plays for a living. When you get paid to do what you love, it never feels like work.” It is obvious she is playing for her living and enjoying every moment!

I highly recommend this book for anybody that is creative, looking to find the creativity in themselves or looking for inspiration and encouragement in their creative endeavors.

I had the pleasure of meeting Terri at Walt Disney’s Carolwood Barn at a signing event and she is as energetic and positive in person as she is in the book. Thank you Terri for coming out to support the Barn!

Poster Art of the Disney Parks

Poster Art of the Disney Parks
By Danny Handke & Vanessa Hunt

I just received my copy of Poster Art of the Disney Parks by Handke & Hunt. I totally enjoyed this book!

As a long time Disneyland fan and fan of other Disney Parks and Art I fell in love with the book. This book takes you through the basic of why there is Disney Parks Poster Art. It gives the basic on Poster Art and how it is designed.

As you look through the book you are taken back in time to the old posters for attractions long gone and the posters for attractions that are still there but have been redesigned.

Having enjoyed many visits to Disneyland over the past 55 years I was touched at seeing posters I remember seeing as a child. When I saw them I was taken back to many precious childhood memories of times with family and friends. I saw the poster for 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and remembered “setting sail” and exploring the ocean with my grandmother when I was a tot.

I highly suggest this table top book for any Disney fan’s collection!

Tony Baxter wrote the forward of this book. Tony Baxter, Danny Handke & Vanessa Hunt will be at Walt Disney’s Carolwood Barn Sunday April 20th, 2014 to sign copies of this book. Terri Hardin will also be there to sign copies of her book!

There will also be Easter Egg Hunts for children 10 and under!

Walt’s Barn will be open 11am to 3pm and admission is free! The Barn is maintained and kept opened by donations. It is in Griffith Park
5202 Zoo Drive
Los Angeles, California
There is road work around the Barn at this time so it is suggested you come in from the East or LA Zoo side not the Travel Town side. The parking lot is on the east side of the Los Angeles Live Steamers property.

Terri Hardin Puppeteer & Imagineer

Terri Hardin Puppeteer and Imagineer

Terri Hardin fell in love with art and drama as a young child. She was active in her school dramas. When she saw Master Puppeteer, Shari Lewis perform she was inspired to create her own version of Lewis’ iconic Lamp Chop.

Hardin’s skill as a puppeteer opened doors for her in Hollywood. Her first job was building the stillsuits for the film version of Dune and acting as stunt double for Sean Young. Later at Columbia Pictures she worked on Ghostbusters playing both of the demon dogs at the “Temple of Zuul” and served as puppeteer for both the Stay-Puft Marshmallo Man and the ghost librarian. She is also a Muppet Puppeteer.

In 1987 Hardin was working for Universal designing “walk-around” character costumes when she was contacted by Disney. After 8 interviews she was given the assignment of helping to design Big Thunder Mountain and the Dragons Lair attractions at Disneyland Paris. Her passion was not unnoticed and she was assigned the job of designing the entire Dragons Lair.

Her work can also be seen at Disney California Adventure and the Magic Kingdom.

Terri Hardin and Tony Baxter will be at Walt Disney’s Carolwood Barn April 20th to do a meet and great. The Barn is open 11 am to 3 pm.

Check out some videos of the Dragons Lair at Disneyland Paris. I found these on YouTube.

What is at Walt’s Barn? ~ Carolwood Railroad Control Panel

What is at Walt’s Barn? ~ Carolwood Railroad Control Panel

When Walt did anything he did it all the way, even if it was just for home use.

Walt wanted a way to control his 1/8 scale train from the barn. He also wanted a way to tell where his train was on the track from in the barn. He built what is widely considered to be the first ride control system! From this control panel Walt could tell where his train was and control the switches to move the train from one track to the next.

For this and many other reasons Walt’s Barn is considered to be the birth place of W.E.D. now called WDI or Imagineering.

What's At Walt's Barn? ~ King George V Locomotive

What’s At Walt’s Barn? ~ King George V Locomotive

When Lillian Disney died the Disney Estate was sold and the new owner decided to demolish the home and Walt’s barn where he worked on his backyard trains. Diane Disney Miller, Walt & Lillian’s daughter asked if she could have the barn.

The barn was dismantled moved to the Los Angeles Live Steamers Club/Museum (LALS) in Griffith Park, Ca. Walt was a member of the LALS and had donated the track from his trains to the club before his death.

There are many wonderful items in the barn today. You will find items that belonged to Walt and some that belonged to some of his top animators, Ward Kimball and Ollie Johnson along with others. There are also many items from Disneyland.

Today I’m going to share about the King George V Locomotive that sits in the middle of the barn. This is a beautiful old locomotive belonged to Walt Disney and has an interesting story to tell, if only it could talk.

In 1951 Walt and Lillian took a holiday to Europe. While there Walt went into the Bassett-Lowke Ltd. Shop in London to look around for a train to add to his new backyard train set. It was early in the day and Walt made the purchase with the agreement to come back in the afternoon to finalize the purchase and arrange shipment back to the United States.

Shortly after Walt left the shop another American came in and wanted to buy the locomotive Walt had just purchased. The shopkeeper told the man the locomotive had been sold but to come back that afternoon to see if the purchaser changed his mind.

That afternoon both men met at the train store and got to talking over this locomotive. Walt asked the man what he did for a living. When he said he was an artist Walt told him to come talk to him when he got back to America. Walt did not let the gentleman have the King George V.

This second American train enthusiast was none other than Harper Goff! Harper did look Walt up when he got home and ended up designing the Nautilus Submarine for 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. He worked on many other Disney movies. He also developed conceptual ideas for Disneyland including Main Street USA and the Jungle Cruise.

Walt and Lillian took a cruise ship home to America. He had the locomotive crated and shipped home on the ship with him. On the way across the “Pond” the crate with the prized locomotive became soaked with sea water and the locomotive suffered water damage. Walt never repaired the King George V locomotive. He was too busy with “plans for his little park”, Disneyland. The locomotive has sat in storage unrepaired and unused since 1951.

On a funny note, Walt could never have ran the King George V on his tracks as his existing layout was 1/8 scale and the King George V is a different scale.

This train, along with a picture of a dejected Walt Disney checking out the water damage after getting it home are on display at Walt Disney’s Carolwood Barn.

I’ll be posting more stories from the barn in the coming days.

Christmas at Walt's Barn

Christmas at Walt’s Barn

Walt's Barn was decorated for Christmas!
Let me start off with by saying once again what Walt’s Barn is. Walt Disney had a backyard small scale railroad on his Holmby Hills, Ca estate. He built a small barn as a workshop in a meadow in the backyard to work on his trains. After Lillian Disney’s death the home was sold and Diane Disney Miller asked the new owner if she could dismantle the barn and have it. The new owner said yes and the barn was dismantled and moved it to the Los Angeles Live Steamer Museum in Griffith Park, Ca near Travel Town and the Merry-Go-Round that Walt took Diane and Sharon to ride on years before.

The Christmas Tree in the Barn
December’s Barn day was December 15th. This month was planned to be filled with activities. Santa and Mindy Johnson were scheduled to be there to meet and greet the visitors to the barn. Then with the passing of Diane Disney Miller a condolence book was to be set out for any and all to sign. Nobody at the barn expected what happened!

Santa collected toys for Toys for Tots!
Here is Mindy Johnson singing her book.
From the moment the barn opened it was busy and exciting! Mindy was scheduled to be there from 1-3 to sign copies of her new book, “Tinker Bell: An Evolution” but she was there at 11 when the barn opened! Along with Mindy Alice Davis (Disney Imagineering Legend) came and shortly after Katheryn Beaumont (Voice of both Alice and Wendy) followed. Then came Ginni Mack (Face model of Tinker Bell)! Soon came Disney Animator Floyd Norman and his wife! Floyd just came to get Mindy’s autograph and ended up signing some himself! Floyd had designed a Christmas gift for the volunteers and ended up signing them for the us! Tony Anselmo (Disney Animator and voice of Donald Duck) was there just to visit! It seems they are all friends and when one decided to come they called each other and WOW!!!!

Here we are with Alice Davis and Ginni Mack

Kathryn Beaumont and Tony Anslemo spent time chatting.

Joanna Miller chatted with Alice and Ginni

Animator Floyd Norman

Floyd Norman's gift to the Carolwood Volunteers.
The visitor that touched the hearts of the volunteers and made us proud to be there spending the day trying to remind people of Walt Disney the man and train enthusiast was Joanna Miller, daughter of Diane Disney Miller, granddaughter of Walt Disney.

This was Joanna's reaction to being told how much the Disney family legacy means to people!
It is more than just the parks and movies that touch lives.
Joanna was there to see her granddad’s barn. She was there to see what legacy her mother had saved and shared with the public so generously. Joanna did not want people to know she was there so the volunteers never mentioned to other guests she was there and gave her space to look around and interact on her terms. Joanna in turn appreciated that and returned the kindness with gracious thanks and photos with us. Joanna was touched as she understood on a deeper level the impact her grandfather, mother and other family members have had on people’s lives.

The Carolwood Barn Volunteers with Joanna Miller,
This assemblage of Disney Luminaries does not often happen at the Carolwood Barn. There are often several around but not this number at one time. We could tell each of them enjoyed their time at the barn as their presence was enjoyed by all the guests and volunteers. Unlike other Disney events the luminaries (except Joanna who is still grieving losing her mother and rightfully deserved and requested the space) were more than happy to sign autographs when asked. No charge, no problems! Each and every one was gracious and appreciative of the fans who are interested in them. Every one of them was happy to answer a question or two.

George Bruns 2001 Disney Legend Award is on display at Walt's Barn.

If you are ever in the Southern California area on the 3rd Sunday of the month and have the day free I suggest stopping in at Walt’s Barn. The barn is open from 11 am – 3 pm. There is no charge but donations are gratefully accepted. This is the only free Disney display around!

This ensued a project to start a foundation to manage the barn. The Carolwood Foundation was formed to protect and manage the Barn. The Barn was moved to the Los Angeles Live Steamers Museum in Griffith Park, Ca. Walt had been a member of the Los Angeles Live Steamers Club that operates the small scale train museum next door to Travel Town in Griffith Park just a short distance away from where the Griffith Park Merry-Go-Round is located. This is the Merry-Go-Round that Walt sat watching his girls ride and dreamed of a place where families could play together.
