Disney Cruise Line Dream-Class Ships - 1 of 2 Disney Dream

Disney Cruise Line Dream-Class Ships – The Dream

There is a lot offered on the Dream-Class Disney Ships. They are larger than the Disney Classic-Class

Disney Dream-Class Stats:

Gross Tonnage: 129,690 GT

Length 1,114.7 feet / Beam 137 Feet / Draft 27.3 Feet

Number of Passenger Cabins: 1,250

Passenger Capacity: 4,000

Cruising Speed: 23 Knots

As of late 2024 Disney Dream’s homeport is Fort Lauderdale, Fl. Dream has often spent time in Europe doing Mediterranean and Europe cruises. At this time Dream is doing 3-5-Night cruises.

Exploring Disney Dream:

Restaurants:

Royal Palace is themed to honor all the Disney Princesses. The menu is continental, with French/American cuisine.

Animator’s Palate is themed like an Animator’s Workshop. The food is Asian, Pacific Islands and Californian Cuisine. The fun starts the moment you enter the restaurant for dinner. There are 3 different possible shows in Animator’s Palate on The Dream-Class.

The 1st possible show on the The Dream-Class ships. You will be given a placemat and markers to draw your own character. If you follow directions your character will join classic Disney Characters in classic cartoons shown on the screens around the dining room.

The 2nd show is Pirate Night! The show is much like the normal show, except the characters drawn are all pirate themed! From Peter Pan, Pirates of the Caribbean and even Treasure Planet the characters bring the Pirate fun to dinner.

The 3rd show is usually on the Dream-Class ships and is like Turtle Talk from Disney Parks. Crush goes around the dining room to every table saying hi and chatting. The Moon Fish from the movies join the fun adding a fun game to the meal.

My suggestion is to request Animator’s Palate as many times as you can for your cruise and make a request for Animator’s for Pirate Night as well. On a 7-Night cruise you can get 3 shows! For a 4-Night cruise request it twice with Pirate Night being one. You will get Royal Palace and Enchanted Garden once and Animator’s twice.

Enchanted Garden is an elegant conservatory theme. During the meal the ceiling transforms from bright-blue daylight to stunning sunset and then you see the twinkling night sky filled with stars. Make sure to see the beautiful fountain in the middle of the restaurant. Other than lights there is no show.

Shows:

The 3 Broadway-Style shows are Beauty and the Beast, The Golden Mickeys, and Disney Believe.

Beauty and the Beast is based on the movie Beauty and the Beast.

The Golden Mickeys is a fun Oscar type awards show. Walk the Red Carpet and be part of the pre-show! The show looks at all the great characters from past and current Disney movies.

Disney Believe is a romp through the most beloved Disney Stories as a young girl looks for help figuring out how to get her father’s attention.

All Disney Ships have the Sail a Wave/Sail Away deck party and Pirates Night. Some sailings have a Frozen themed Deck Party if they are not doing Pirate Night.

Disney Dream is the first ship to have the AquaDuck, a Watercoaster at sea. It is more than a water slide and less than a traditional land coaster. Get into your 2-person raft and let the water take you for a ride on this beautiful coaster powered by the flow of the water. Swing out over the side of the ship as you leave the loading platform, in the back funnel, and look down at the ocean below you. Shoot through the front funnel and splash down on the pool deck below.

There is a fun lounge called the Skyline Lounge! Take a seat at the bar and watch the Skyline change! Throughout your visit the skyline will change to show amazing views of cities around the world! Look closely and you may see “Hidden Mickeys and other Disney Characters” in the skyline!

If you love Belle and the Beast, Elsa and Anna this ship is a special treat for you. Yes, the other characters will be there as well.

Disney Dream is Accessibility friendly.

There is Goofy’s Mini Golf at the back of the ship as well as the Muppets Detective Agency Game for extra fun!

How do You Choose a Disney Cruise??

How do You Choose a Disney Cruise??

There are several ways to pick a Disney Cruise. First, I’ll say no matter where or what ship you sail on you will enjoy yourself. Here is the main questions to consider.

Are you more interested in what the ship has to offer or the Ports of Call? Personally I’m more interested in the ship but do enjoy the ports as well!

If you are more interested in what the ships have to offer, make sure you consider the following:

Restaurants – Some of the ships have 2 restaurants with shows during meals while others have only 1. The one with no show is more of an elegant restaurant with beautiful Disney theme but no real show.

Shows – Do you have a favorite Disney movie you would love to see in a live show? Check your ship!

Additional Offerings - Such as AquaDuck/AquaMouse and Incredible Sports area, AR Game on the app or Muppet Detective Agency, Kids Club offerings are slightly different between ships as well.

Length of Cruise – Some ships only offer 3 & 4-Night cruises while some offers 7-Night+ cruises.

If Ports of Call are what you are interested in make sure you look to see if the itinerary you are heading for has places you wish to go to.

Do you want a taste of Europe? Consider the Mediterranean cruises offered during the summer. Want to see Alaska? Go on the Wonder during the summer! Want an Island get away?? Any of the Bahaman or Caribbean Cruises are fantastic and will include a stop at one of Disney’s Private Ports, Castaway Cay, or Lookout Cay. In 2025 and beyond you can go on the Disney Adventure and check out ports in Asia and the South Pacific.

Disney Magic and Disney Wonder are the Classic Ships. They are twin sisters and very similar in style and build. Magic was the 1st of the Disney Ships and Wonder was the 2nd. These are the 2 smallest ships of the fleet. They do not have the AquaDuck or AquaMouse. Magic does have a much smaller slide called the AquaDunk that is fun. It is nothing like the AquaDuck or AquaMouse. They are beautifully themed and have a nautical design. 2 of the 3 main restaurants you will enjoy in the evenings have shows while you dine! You will see the Black and White walls of Animator’s Palate go colored and pictures on the wall come to life while you dine. In Tiana’s Place and Rapunzel’s Royal Table get ready for live music and entertainment while you dine! Shows are different in the Walt Disney Theater on the two ships. So you will see something different between them.

Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy are the second set of twins for the Disney Cruise Line. They are s little larger than the Magic and Wonder. They both have the AquaDuck, the first Water Coaster at sea. They have mini-Golf and the Muppet Detective Agency where you can solve a Muppet Crime! This is lots of fun for everyone. Only Animator’s Palate has a show. It will either be a version of Turtle Talk where Crush and friends come to talk to you during dinner. You may be asked to your own character, you will be given instructions to follow and you may see it come to life on the screens with classic Disney characters.

Disney Wish was the last ship to join the fleet in 2022. Her triplet sisters, Disney Treasure and Disney Destiny will be joining in 2024 and 2025 respectively. Disney Wish, Disney Treasure and we assume Disney Destiny will have 2 restaurants with live shows during dinner. Wish and Treasure have the Marvel Cinematic Dining Adventure that has a show. Wish has Arendale a Frozen Dining Adventure and Treasure has Plaza Da Coco. Disney Destiny’s restaurants have not been announced as of yet. You will not find Animator’s Palate on these ships. The Wish and Treasure have the AquaMouse (The first Disney Attraction at sea. Part Water Coater like the AquaDuck and Part Dark Ride.) We can assume Disney Destiny will also have a version of AquaMouse. Wish has 2 story lines for AquaMouse. Treasure has 3 story lines planned. We have not even heard if Destiny will have AquaMouse or not, but can assume she will. I’m guessing she will get the 3 stories from the Treasure and add one of her own.

Little is known about Disney Adventure. What we do know is she was not purpose built for Disney. Disney found the ship sitting abandoned in a closed shipyard over ½ built. She was being built for a Chinese Cruise Line that went under during Covid. The shipyard also closed down due to Covid. Disney purchased the ship and had the shipyard that is building the Treasure take over completing the build and changing it to fit Disney design. We know she will be ported in Singapore for at least 5 years after she is complete. She is much larger than any of the other Disney ships. That is all we really honestly know about Adventure.

I’m going to tell you what I choose. I look at the restaurants and shows first. Then I look at the other onboard offerings. After that I look at the ports to see if I want to go there. If the ship is interesting, I don’t care about the ports because I’ll just stay on the ship, enjoying myself. I look for at least 2 restaurants with “shows” so Dram and Fantasy are lower on my list. I love longer cruises and only do short ones that leave from a local port.

I hope this helps you pick a cruise!!

Disney Cruise Line Water Slides/Coasters

Disney Cruise Line Water Slides/Coasters

AquaDuck, AquaDunk or AquaMouse they are all fun and found on the Disney Cruise Ships.

AquaDuck, on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy  was the first WaterCoaster at sea. It is not really waterslide as the water actually pushed up uphill at some points. You board your raft on Deck 14 Aft Port side in the back funnel. You are swept out of the  launch bay and out over the side of the ship in a loop. You are riding in a clear plastic tube so you can see down to the sea below you. You loop back over the decks of the ship and drop and make a sharp right turn into the forward funnel of the ship! You go through the funnel in the dark and come out the other side. You then drop down to Deck 10 to a splash down pad on the Starboard side of the ship near the back funnel.

Next up came the AquaDunk on the Disney Magic. Disney got the AquaDunk during a reimagining some years back. The Aqua Duck is a body slide and comes out the forward funnel and drops you almost straight down into a loop over the ocean, much like the AquaDuck. You then end in a splash down pad on Deck 9.

The newest is the AquaMouse on the Disney Wish! The AquaMouse is similar to the AquaDuck with the addition of video screens, misters, foggers and water jets spritzing you as you sip past. You will see one of 2 stories as you ride AquaMouse. Mickey & Minnie are the lead characters in these funs stories. The first is “Scuba Scramble.” It is a zany underwater adventure where Mickey and Minnie run a Scuba Shop! The second is” Swiss Meltdown” and takes you on a mountain sledding excursion. Now what could go wrong with either of those adventures?

Here is some information on riding the AquaDuck and AquaMouse rides on the Disney Dream, Fantasy and Wish. You must be at least 42 inches tall to ride, and at least 54 inches tall to ride alone. Children under the age of 7 must have someone over the age of 14 go with them to ride.

Disney Magic’s AquaDunk you must be 48 inches tall and under 300 lbs. to ride.

The only ship of the Diseny Fleet that does not have a family waterslide that adults can go on is the Disney Wonder. The Wonder is in Alaska during the summer months and has been retrofitted to add more shelter from the cool Alaskan evenings during the summer months. That may be the reason.

Next time you sail on one of the Disney Ships be ready to make a splash down!!

Disney Cruise Line Has More NEW Ships Coming!!

Disney Cruise Line Has More NEW Ships Coming!!

The Disney Wish joined the fleet in 2023, bringing the total ships in the Disney fleet to 5! The Wish was the first of 3 Triton class ships Disney had commissioned before the pandemic.

In 2024 the Wish’s sister, the Disney Treasure will join the fleet!! The date has not has not been released yet. Looking at the just released Summer of 2024 Itineraries I believe it will happen after September 2024. Few details have been released about the treasure. Let me share what is known about her.

The overall theme of the ship will be Adventure. Aladdin and Jazmine will be found riding Carpet in the Grand Hall Lobby. There is not much more information about her yet. We do know she will have the same overall layout as the Wish. They have not announced the restaurant themes or shows. We do not yet know who will be on the back of the ship as of yet.

Last year, November 2022 Disney made the announcement they had done something special and new! They had purchased a partly built mega ship! This ship was being built for a cruise line that did not survive the financial losses of the pandemic. The shipyard building the ship also failed. Disney had the shipyard building their ships take over the failed shipyard and they are having it completed! It will be one of the largest ships on the seas. It will have the capacity to carry 6,000 guests and 2,300 crew members. It will have lost of Disney touches added and of course the Disney shows and service.

In 2025 the partly built ship will be finished and join the Disney Fleet! The yet to be named 7th ship of the fleet will not be sailing out of US ports! She will be based in Singapore for at least the next 5 years!

There will be a third Triton class ship joining the fleet in 2026. Two of the triton ships were announced back before the pandemic. Construction was delayed due to the pandemic and Disney made the surprise announcement they were adding a 3rd ship to the order! That would have brought the total number of ships in the Disney Fleet to 7. Now this ship will be the 8th ship in the Disney fleet!!

Here is a list of the Disney Ships and the dates they came into or will come into service:

Disney Classic Class Ships

Disney Magic – July 1998

Disney Wonder – August 1999

Disney Dream Class Ships

Disney Dream – January 2011

Disney Fantasy – March 2012

Updates to the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App

Updates to the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App

Disney Cruise Line is updating their Navigator App! Looks like DCL is going to solve some long-standing issues with the app and make it easier for guests to explore what is available on the ship from home. It will also make it easier for guests to find out about things they can do while on the ship.

At this time it is only available for guests booked on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, using Apple iOS devices. DCL says they will be adding the other ships and Android users soon.

Today, July. 7th 2022, an update was made to the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App for Apple iOS users booked on sailings aboard the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. Guests will now be able to explore ship locations and activities, in more detail, from home on the app.  NOTE: This feature will be added for the Disney Magic, Disney Wonder and Disney Wish and Android devices, in the near future.

The ‘Explore’ tab is tailored to be specific to the ship that the Guest is sailing on, based on the reservation that I slinked to their account. Guests will be able to learn more about locations and activities on the ship for their sailing.

Additionally, Guests will be able to view and book activities, such as Palo Brunch, a beverage tasting or spa treatment, through the ‘Explore’ tab if they are within their booking window and, if not, there will be a countdown that lets them know how many days they have until their booking window opens.

Picking a Disney Cruise Ship

Picking a Disney Cruise Ship

You’ve decided to go on a Disney Cruise! Congratulations!!!! Now what ship are you sailing? You don’t know? You can’t pick? Ok, let’s talk about picking a Disney ship.

The Disney fleet has 4 ships, 2 sets of almost identical twins. Disney Magic and Disney Wonder are the eldest and smaller of the ships. The Disney Magic just underwent major refurbishment. The pools that were the same on both ships have been changed with a new twisting slide and the AquaDunk added. The kids clubs also went through a big change bringing in the Marvel characters to the cruise ships for the first time. The Disney Wonder is still much as it was originally built with only a couple of minor alterations to make it more comfortable on deck in the cooler Alaskan weather.

Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy are the newer and larger of the 4 ships. They were put into service in 2011 and 2012 respectively. Both have an upgraded Animators Pallet Restaurant with an interactive dinner show. The Disney Fantasy actually has 2 different shows. Both have interactive “Magical Art” that comes to life around the ship. Both have Goofy’s Sports Deck that is larger than the sports decks on the older ships and has Miniature Golf that is not available on the smaller ships.

The main difference between the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy is the length of cruises they offer. The Disney Dream only offers 3 and 4 night cruises while the Disney Fantasy offers 7 nights and longer. Be aware that the 7 night and longer cruises offer more special things such as demonstrations/talks given by Disney Imagineers, Disney Authors and Documentary Film Maker along with others. They also have cooking lessons with visiting Disney Chefs, we had the pleasure of having cooking demonstrations with the head chef of Club 33.

There are two ways to pick a ship to cruise on. First you need to pick length of cruise 3, 4, 7 nights or longer? Second you need to pick the departure port. Third, most people consider where the cruise goes. Are they places you wish to go and feel comfortable? Most Disney Cruises leaving from ports in Florida go to Disney Privet Island Castaway Cay, but not all do. If a stop at Castaway Cay is important to you check the itineraries offered.

No matter the length of your Disney Cruise or the Disney Ship you pick you can be assured there is something from everybody. The kids are entertained in the Kids Clubs and in the kids areas and you can enjoy the adult spots when you wish to get away from them. All the ships have Kid only, Family and Adult only areas so everybody is happy.

Happy Birthday Disney Dream Cruise Ship!!

Happy Birthday Disney Dream Cruise Ship!!

Today is the birthday of the Disney Dream! The Disney Dream set sail on her maiden voyage January 26th, 2011! The Dream is the 3rd ship in the Disney in the Disney fleet.

The Disney Dream sails out of Port Canaveral, Florida on 3 and 4 day Bahamian cruises with stops at Disney’s privet island, Castaway Cay.

Dream has many firsts for the Disney Cruise Line. It is the first of the second set of ships commissioned for the Disney Cruise Line. It was the first of the fleet to have a non-toxic hull paint that increases fuel efficiency. First water coaster at sea or on land (AquaDuck). Magical Portholes that make even the inside cabins seem like ocenview. An updated Animators Palate Restaurant. Goofy’s 9 Hole Mini-Golf course and sports zone. There is also Enchanted Artwork throughout the ship that comes to life while guests are looking at it.

Jennifer Hudson is the Disney Dream’s Godmother. Jennifer Hudson started her career as an entertainer on the Disney Wonder.

Like the older Disney Ships (Disney Magic and Disney Wonder) there are 3 pools that give separate space for kids, families and adults. There are other areas that are designed for specific groups of people.

Rotational Dining is the standard on all the Disney Ships. You rotate each night between the 3 main dining rooms. Your serving staff follows your rotation and you have the same team each night. This adds continuity to the service and your staff learns quickly what you like. They also watch out for things like food allergies. There are 2 adult only restaurants that you can have brunch or dinner at. Palo is on all the Disney Ships and Remy’s is only on the two newer ships. Your servers do not follow you to Palo or Remy’s and both of them cause extra.

There is lots to do on the Disney Ships from kids clubs for the younger cruisers to tours, spa/salon treatments, shows, dancing, and ale or wine tasting for adults.

So Happy Birthday Disney Dream!!! Fair seas and a following wind be with you!

Broadway caliber stage shows, first run and classic movies or a deck party with fireworks end your days on the ship. There are

Disney Fantasy Officially At Sea!!

Disney Fantasy Officially at Sea!

On Saturday, March 31st the Disney Fantasy set sail on her maiden voyage! Oh how I wish I could have sailed away with her! Over the last month Disney has done a good job of getting people excited about the maiden voyage of the newest ship of the Disney Cruise Line! Did you get to watch her pull out with the fireboats spraying water as she went?

While Fantasy is much like her slightly older twin the Fantasy and a bigger version of her older sibs the Magic and Wonder. From a distance there is little to tell the ships apart. They are all the same colors and shape. When you get nearer you can see the size difference between the sisters. The two newer ships are longer, wider and taller than their older sisters. The newer ships also have the Aqua Duck water coaster that the older ships don’t have.

One thing I’ve noticed looking at the ship maps on line, and have confirmed talking to people who have been on the ships is the fact the adult Quiet Cove pool area on the newer twins (Dream/Fantasy) is smaller than the Quiet Cove area on the older ships (Magic/Wonder). For some reason there is more lounge/bar space on the newer ships.

While each ship is different all are fun! Some things that are unique to the Fantasy is an added adult quiet area with water fountains at the front of the ship. There are different water play areas for the little ones on both ships, the theme is slightly different. Dream has a Nemo theme where the Fantasy has Donald’s nephews getting into trouble with the Aqua Ducks left over parts. The Fantasy also has the added Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique and the Muppets Adventure Game.

Whatever Disney Ship and destination you choose I don’t think you will be disappointed. They all offer so much fun. I am making it a goal to go on all of the ships. I’ve been on the Magic and Wonder. I’ve got plans to go with Walts-Basement.com on the Dream in 2014. I’m going to get on the Fantasy at some point.

What ship do you wish to go on?

The Godmothers of the Disney Cruise Ships

Updated to Include the Disney Fantasy

All cruise ships have Godmothers. Most of the time it is celebrities and Royalty that get the fun and honor. A ships Godmother christens the ship and blesses it. She is entrusted with guiding the ship to and around all its destinations by placing a blessing upon it. Now just because ships have Godmothers it does not mean they don’t also have Godfathers. This maritime tradition has been going on for about 4,000 years.

Disney Cruise Line, like all other cruise lines does have a grand christening ceremony and announces a Godmother or a set of Godparents for each of their ships. Here is a list of the Godmothers of the Disney Cruise Line.

Disney just completed the expansion of the Disney Cruise Line Fleet by adding the Disney Dream last year and the Disney Fantasy earlier this month. There are now four ships in the Disney Cruise Line fleet.

Fantasy

Forth Ship in the Fleet and twin to the Dream

File:Disney Fantasy arriving in New York.png
March 1st, 2012 in New Your City, Mariah Carey was named Godmother of the Fantasy. Mickey escorted Mariah into the Atrium Lobby and with much fanfare she said, “I christen this ship the Fantasy.” Well, from inside she could not “Christen” the ship with the Champaign so her husband, Nick Cannon along with Minnie stood on a access deck at the front of the ship and smashed the bottle on the ship. When Nick hit the outside of the ship a 6ft tall “bottle of Champaign” sent confetti flying all around the atrium lobby of the ship.

The Disney Company chose New York as the place to christen the Fantasy because in the 1940s all ships belonging to American companies were christened there. It was an attempt to bring back the classic feel and grandeur.

I’m not sure why Mariah Carey was chosen. Yes, she is a great singer and performer. I do not know of any other connection to the Disney Company for her. I’ll just say I think a better choice could have been made, but that is just my opinion.

This marked a first for the Disney Cruise Line. It is the first time a Disney Ship has been christened outside of Port Canaveral, FL.

I must say I was personally disappointed in how Disney handled the event. I was hoping they would live stream the christening online as they did for the Dream. For some reason they chose not to stream christening.

It appeared, from the video that has been released that most of the event took place on the ship with the guests gathered either in the atrium lobby or the Walt Disney Theater for the festivities. This kept the regular fans that live in the area from seeing what was happening.

Disney Magic

First Ship in the Fleet

Christened in 1998

Patty Disney, wife of Roy. O. Disney was Magic’s Godmother until her death this year.

Roy O. Disney was named Godfather along with his wife.

Roy O. Disney was the son of Roy E. Disney and nephew of Walt Disney. He was on the board of the Disney Company for many years.

Disney Wonder

Second Ship in the Fleet

Twin to the Magic, Christened in 1999

Tinker Bell was named Fairy Godmother of the Wonder and is the first Fairy Godmother for any cruise ship in the world.

Disney wanted to have one of its most beloved characters have the honor. Tinker Bell completed the christening by sprinkling Pixie Dust over the Wonder. Tinker Bell was the first fictional character to be named as a ships Godmother.

Disney Dream

Third Ship in the Fleet

1st of the second set of the larger twins

January, 2011 in a huge ceremony webcasted around the world Jennifer Hudson was made Godmother of the Dream.

Jennifer Hudson started her professional singing career on the Disney Wonder and is therefore a great choice of Godmother for the Disney Dream.

Fog Horn Wars!!! What the Heck is a Fog Horn War?!?!

Fog Horn Wars!!! What the Heck is a Fog Horn War?!?

For years cruise ships have had fog horn wars. What ship has the biggest, badest sounding horn! From my laughing look at many cruise ship fog horn wars the bigger the ship the deeper the horn. Sad to say no fog horn wars on either of my two cruises.

Since the Disney Magic started sailing in 1998 Disney ships have won the wars. At first the Magic was the 5th largest cruise ship at sea. This gave it the wonderful deep horn that gains respect. But as years have gone on ships became larger. Now they are double the size of the Magic and her sister the Wonder. Their horns are deeper that either of the Disney older twins. Still Magic and Wonder won the wars hands down with the guests on the other ships clapping and laughing as they did.

How the grand old ladies of the Disney Cruise line won the fog horn wars was to blow the Disney Cruise Line signature fog horn trumplets and play the first seven notes of “When You Wish Upon a Star.” Magic and Wonder can still out blow and win the fog horn battles with almost any cruise ship at sea. Even the biggest ships end up surrendering to them. Ships signal surrender with one short blast of their horn.

The days of the Disney Magic and Wonder winning every fog horn war is over. It ended last year when the Disney Dream came into service. Not only does the Dream and her twin the Fantasy have deeper horns as decided by their size, they also play the 7 note “When You Wish Upon a Star.”

Here is a link to the Disney Magic and Dream having a fog horn war at Castaway Cay. What I would have given to be there! Oh my! If you watch the video you will see the Magic bravely try to battle it out with her much larger yet younger sister, the Dream. As you watch you will see Magic give up just blowing its regular fog horn and go to its trumplets. The Dream responds in kind with its larger trumplets and off they go! In the end poor Magic (and her sister ship the Wonder is the same) can’t compete with the Dream’s trumplets.

Magic and Wonder play

When You Wish Upon a Star

First seven notes of the song only

Dream and Fantasy play (I believe they play the same songs)

(They may play more songs than I list but I only know of these)

When You Wish Upon a Star

First fourteen notes of the song or the first seven or the second set of seven notes.

A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes

Be our Guest

Hi-Diddle-Dee-Dee

It’s a Small World After All

A Pirate’s Life for Me

Just for fun I’ve added a second link here so you can see the Magic battling with a Carnival cruise ship that is much bigger than the Magic.

Red, White, Mickey Shoe Yellow and . . . Monica Blue?

Red, White, Mickey Shoe Yellow and . . . Monica Blue?

The Colors of the Disney Cruise Ships

There is an interesting story behind the colors of the Disney Cruise Ships. Each color has a reason for being on the ship and a story about how it came to be.

Disney Cruise Line has a unique set of colors for their ships. Disney wanted the look of a classic ocean liner of the 1930s & 40s. Those old grand ships were usually painted white and dark navy blue. They also wanted the ship to remind people of seeing Disney’s main mouse, Mickey!

The smoke stacks are a bright cheery red like Mickey’s red shorts. The upper decks are white reminding you of Mickey’s bright white gloves. The lifeboats are a Mickey Shoe Yellow (and caused a problem with maritime law). The main color of the ship looks to be black like Mickey’s body and ears. In reality the main body of the ship is a shade of blue that Disney named Monica Blue.

The smoke stacks were easy. Disney went to their records for the exact mix for Mickey Red. The white for the gloves was just as easy as the red. Both of those remind you of Mickey’s shorts and gloves.

The Mickey Shoe Yellow was an easy color to mix because of Disney’s good records, but maritime law requires orange lifeboats to make them visible from a great distance. Could you see the Disney ship with Red, White, Orange and Monica Blue? Orange and Red together? YUCK! Disney had to prove that the Mickey Shoe Yellow was just as visible as the orange. This took several years and a lot of discussion with documentation to back up Disney’s stance that not only was the Mickey Yellow as visible it is MORE visible for a greater distance.

The hardest color to figure out was the blue/black they wanted for the main body of the ship. As the first ship, The Disney Magic was being built they kept working on it. Many swatches of navy blue and royal blue were brought in and failed the test. The Imagineers kept saying, “We will figure it out when the time comes.”

As the time neared for painting the ship got closer they kept looking for just the right color. One day an Imagineer, named Monica came into the conference in a suit. As she walked in the others noticed the nice shade of black of her suit. As she walked closer they rethought the color of the suit and started commenting on what a wonderful shade of dark blue the suit was. Quickly it was decided to snip a part of her jacket sleeve and rush it to the painters to see if they could mix that color paint. When the paint was mixed and approved it was called Monica Blue

Having been on both the Magic and Wonder I can say the mix of colors is both beautiful and whimsical. The ships have a classic feel without being stuffy. Well Done Disney!!

UPDATE 5/31/2022:
I've now been on all four ships of the Disney Fleet (planning on going on the Wish in 24) I still feel the ships are beautiful, whimsical, and have the classic feel without being stuffy.
