A New Natural Wonder to Explore at Animal Kingdom

 

When it opens in 2027, the new land will represent one of the most culturally rich regions on the planet. From the northern reaches of South America, through Central America, and into parts of Mexico, this is a part of the world where nature doesn’t just surround communities – it shapes them.

 

And ancient cultures are still present in everyday life. Explorers and curious travels continue to fall in love with the region and all there is to discover.

 

During the 2024 Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, we shared the Tropical Americans will be home to Pueblo Esperanza when it opens at Animal Kingdom. Just as you stroll through the Port of Harambe in Africa, or wander the Kingdom of Anandapur in Aisa, you’ll get to experience Pueblo Esperanza, a town with its own history, vivid culture, and of course, vibrant nature.

 

Welcoming Tropical Americas Home

 

Imagineers have long dreamed of adding a land inspired by this region to animal Kingdom. In fact, earlier concepts of potential park expansions imagined guests journeying into the ancient Maya temple and exploring a lush rainforest . . . sound familiar?

Inside Imagineering’s Research Trips for Tropical Americas

 

From the very beginning of this project, Imagineers knew the story of Tropical Americas needed to be grounded in the real world. Just like the Imagineers of yesteryear did when first building Animal Kingdom and the exciting additions that have opened since, our team embarked on several research trips to learn more about the region’s culture, customs, architecture, and folklore.

 

Imagineers always want to tell Disney stories from a place of curiosity and humility, and these trips allow them to go beyond simply re-creating the areas that inspired them. Recently, a small group took a trip to Honduras where they met with Maya artists whose life’s work is carving and recreating intricate details found throughout the Copan site, one of the most extraordinary and well-preserved cities of the ancient Maya civilization.

 

Together, they traveled through the lush mountain valleys to the very quarries that have supplied the region for centuries. They experienced firsthand the striking red and green stones native to the landscape. Witnessing the artistry was a breathtaking moment, made even more meaningful knowing that the same materials that build Copan will find their way to Tropical Americas at Animal Kingdom and be crafted by carvers using the time-honored techniques.

 

The team also traveled to Colombia to immerse ourselves in the places and cultures that inspired Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Encanto,” which will be represented in the first-ever Encanto attraction at a Disney park.

 

There, guests will be invited to celebrate Antonio’s new gift: the ability to talk to animals. And along the way, they’ll learn that no matter what their special gifts or abilities are, they’re all part of the “familia” of living things. During the research trip, the team met with many of the people and visited many of the places that the original “Encanto” filmmakers first visited in researching Disney Animation’s Academy Award-willing film.

 

They also gathered first-hand experiences to ensure Pueblo Esperanza feels like a real, lived-in town true to the region – from the colors and materials of town plazas to the hues of haciendas in varying light to the way buildings respond to climate and terrain.

 

Those journeys are not just about where they go, but the insight, inspiration, and deeper understanding that shapes every detail they bring back. Imagineers travel because there is always more for us to learn, and each experience brings us closer to telling these stories with authenticity and care.

Spirit Airlines Closure - What to Booked Passengers Do?

Spirit Airlines filed for bankruptcy and stopped all operations May 2^nd, 2026. This left both crew and passengers stranded with no way to get home. What do you do now? If your trip has not started yet book with another airline and wait for the refund from Spirit, they do say it will be coming.

 

JetBlue Airways was the first airline to jump up and announce discounted fares for passengers with valid Spirit tickets. JetBlue Airways is booking until the 6^th or so for $99 one way. Other airlines such as American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United, Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Allegiant Air and Avelo. Contact one of the lines mentioned if you are stranded with a Spirit Ticket. If you have a Travel Agent ask them to assist so you can finish out your vacation or business trip with less stress.

 

Many airlines are also assisting stranded Cabin Crew, Pilots and Flight Attendants are being offered Free Jump Seat passage home along with preferred and expiated job interviews for those who wish them. In some ways this is a good thing as there is a shortage of certified Flight Crew available in the industry.

This is a general packing list for any Disney Cruise. You can check the Disney Cruise Website for suggestions for the particular destination you are going to. For example if you are going to Alaska bring more warm clothing and things you an layer. Dress comfortably for vacation – plus bring the appropriate attire for such activities as dinners and Port Adventures.

Embarkation Day Basics

Pack these items in a day bag to keep with you, as your luggage may not arrive at your stateroom until a few hours after the ship leaves port.

·         Medication (in their original containers)

o   I have found that having a picture of your pill container label with a description and picture of the pills will do

·         Passport and/or required citizenship documentation

·         Camera and accessories (batteries, memory card, etc.)

·         Extra prescription glasses or contact lenses

·         Sunscreen or hat

·         Swimsuit and cover-up

·         Any valuables, fragile items, and electronics should be in your Carry On Bags

Attire and Accessories

Here is our suggested list of things to pack in your luggage:

·         T-shirts

·         Shorts

·         Sundresses

·         Sandals or sneakers (rubber-sole shoes for Port Adventures)

Dining attire

Disney Cruise Line ships feature an array of diverse dining experiences, from casual to upscale. Be sure to follow the dress code for your restaurant:

·         Main Dining – Dining attire is cruise casual in all 3 main dining restaurants, meaning no swimwear or tank tops. Guests often like to dress up, but this is optional.

·         Adult Exclusive Dining – Adult exclusive restaurants, like Pal aboard Disney Cruise Line ships are elegant dining experiences and Guests are requested to dress in a manner consistent with the restaurant’s ambiance. Formal or semi-formal attire is recommended. Also permitted is dress-casual attire with a polished look, such as dress pants, jeans in good condition, collard shirts, dressy tops and lifestyle shoes. For brunch at Palo and Palo Steakhouse, dress shorts are acceptable. Clothing such as T-shirts, swimwear and sports attire are not permitted.

·         Themed Nights – On 7-Night sailings and longer cruises, the ship offers themed nights – including formal night – and you’re encouraged to dress up and participate in the evening’s festivities.

Some Guests dress to the theme of the Restaurant they eat at that night. Some Guests dress to the theme of the evening’s live show. Never forget Pirate Night! Pirate Night is on most Disney Cruises and is a lot of fun.

Dressing up or bounding is NOT required. Nobody judges you if your family has matching T-shirts and shorts at dinner or if you have gone all out bounding or dressing up fancy. The rule is to be comfortable and appropriately dressed.

Please DO NOT bring:

• Firearms and ammunition, any kind of knife, sword, dagger, bullwhip or any other type of weapon. These items are not allowed on the ship under any circumstances. Guests found in possession of any weapons or similar prohibited items on their person or in their baggage may be denied boarding and are subject to severe legal penalties.
• Homemade, precooked or other perishable items.
• Irons, bottle warmers, sporting equipment, balloons, candles, musical instruments, illegal drugs inclusive of medically prescribed and synthetic marijuana.
• Coolers, except those carrying medications, baby food or items related to dietary constraints.
• Mexico recently placed a law stating Vape Pens are illegal. You may use them in the smoking section of the ship but for your legal safety do not take them ashore in Mexican Ports.
• Please check the Disney Cruise website for a full list or prohibited items.

New and Returning Entertainment in 2026

New this year, Stitch is hosting an ever-changing dance party at the Rockettower Plaza Stage in Tomorrowland with the help of his friends Lilo and Angel. After getting his paws on Lilo’s Costume Trunk, every accessory he tries on will spark the theme swap and keep the party playfully unpredictable all night long.

 

And, of course, a little spider told us that the Cadaver Dans will be back again this year to sing in soulful harmony.

 

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party Tickets

Prices vary per date and will be available for purchase May 5^th for guests staying at select Walt Disney world Resort hotels, Walt Disney world Swan & Dolphin and Shades of Green.

 

Tickets will be available for purchase starting May 12^th for all oter guests. Party dates often sell out, so our best tip is to plan early and purchase tickets in advance for your desired party date.

 

Discounts on Party Tickets are available for Annual Passholders and Disney Vacation Club Members.

*Planning Tip: Mickey’s Not-So-Scary guests can enter Magic Kingdom as early as 4:00pm before the party kicks off at 7:00 pm this means guests have up to 8 hours to celebrate all across the park.

 

For some of us, our Halloween dreams include a bag overflowing with candy. Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is one of the best trick-or-treat destinations, with over a dozen opportunities to collect candy throughout the park, marked on your party map/ and this year, guests can expect even more fun than ever before with some familiar (and fiendish) faces surprising guests along the trails.

 

At each stop, cast members give out handfuls of Mars Wrigley favorites like M&Ms, Snickers and Starburst. And no worries if you forgot your pumpkin bucket at home: Each guest will receive a complimentary treat bag for candy collection (that includes adults).

 

Trick-or-treaters do not have to be in costume to collect candy. Guests are encouraged to dress up in creative Halloween costumes. Be sure to follow the official costume guidelines.

Guests can meet Sally and Jack Skellington at Mickey’s not so Scary Halloween Party at one of the many character stops that feature exclusive meet-and greet opportunities. At town Square Theater, Mickey and Minnie will greet guests together in their Halloween costumes. Pooh will be in his bumblebee costume, and you may spot festive royal couples ready to say hello, like ariel and Eric and Aladdin and Jasmine.

It’s been three hundred years, right down to the day … or it seems that long since we’ve seen the Sanderson Sisters take the stage. This fan-favorite show is both hilarious and bone-chilling as Winifred, Sarah, and Mary try their haphazard best to cast a spell.

 

It turns out that they need a little help from their friends, who happen to be some of the most nefarious Disney Villains, including the likes of Hades, Cruella De Vil, Jafar, Dr. Facilier, and The Evil Queen. Guests will help add ingredients to the cauldron with lots of clapping and singing along.

 

Disney’s Not So Spooky Spectacular

As the party creeps closer to the witching hour, guests are invited to a spooky story time with the Pumpkin King himself, Jack Skellington, who has transformed Cinderella Castle into a haunted house. Watch as Zero leads Mickey and Friends inside, where spiderwebs, skeletons, and grim Grinning Ghosts await.

For as long as man has sailed the sea and christened ships they have asked someone to be the God Mother of the ship.

 

So, what is a God Parent? The God Parent is responsibility for christening the ship, usually with a bottle of alcohol of some type when it is named and launched. Then it is their responsibility to pray/have good thoughts for safe travels for the crew and passengers on that ship. They pray for protection and success in the case of working ships.

 

Disney Cruise line has kept that tradition alive, and each ship has been given a God Parent. Here is the list:

Magic (1998) – Particia and Roy E. Disney

Wonder (1999) – Tinker Bell

Dream (2011) – Jennifer Hudson

Fantasy (2012) – Mariah Caarey

Wish (2022) – Make-A-Wish Children (past, present, and future)

Treasure (2024) – All Disney Cast & Crew Members World Wide

Destiny (2025) – Susan Egan

Adventure (2026) – Robert Downey Jr.

Believe (2027) – To be announced near or at the christening of the ship.

 

The fun thing about the Wonder is it was the first time ever a fairy, cartoon or fictional character was named godparent or any ship.

Some of this is known fact much is reasonable speculation. I will clearly state what is Fact and what is Speculation.

 

Known Facts!

What is New!

New Year-Round Ports! There will be new homeports starting September 2027. It has been officially been announced by both the ports and DCL that there will be a ship or two at the Port of Galveston, Tx and San Diego, Ca.

 

Disney Magic and Disney Wonder will be sailing out of San Diego, Ca year-round.

*This does not mean they are not going to Alaska. More on this in my opinions/speculations.

*This will be the year-round schedule starting 2027 September to May has both ships going out of San Diego. May to September there will only be one ship.

 

There is speculation of what ship might be full time at Galveston, Tx but the ship to be assigned there has not been announced.

 

Disney Believe joins the fleet at the end of 2027. She will be the Ninth ship in the fleet. The eighth ship I believe to be based in the US. She can be placed at any homeport Disney has. Tradition says they start at one of the two Disney Florida homeports.

 

There is not really much more known for sure so here is my speculation.

 

The contract between San Diego, Catalina Island and DCL sets Magic and Wonder up to be in California full time. During the summer there will be at least one Disney ship going out of San Diego. Magic and Wonder are the two ships specifically named in both contracts. Catalina leaves an opening for an “yet to be named” Disney ship.

 

For the last few years both Magic and Wonder have been going to Alaska for the summer months. I honestly do not see that stopping. Popularity and guest stratification are high for that destination and Disney pays attention to Guest responses. If both ships leave San Diego to go to Alaska that leaves no ship in California as contracts states there must be. In my opinion DCL will bring a third ship in during the summer. Will they take the unnamed ship to Alaska leaving one of the Classic-Ships in San Diego? Will the unnamed ship stay in San Diego taking the Classic-Ships spot in California for the summer? That is unknown. We don’t know what class of ship or what ship. Again, a third ship coming to California for the summer is just speculation and my thought.

 

Galveston, Tx will get a ship in September 2027. The ship to call Tx homeport has not been mentioned in any official communications from Disney or the Ports. It may be one of the Dream-Class Ships or one of the first two Wish-Class ships.

 

I believe that Believe and Destiny will stay in Florida with a total of five ships split between the Florida Ports, Port Canaveral and Fort Lauderdale. During spring/summer of 2028 I believe one ship will head to Europe, as they have been doing so for years; and a second ship will head to California to cover what Magic and Wonder can’t. That will leave three ships in Florida between the two ports for Spring/Summer.

 

After 2028 everything is unknown except for where Magic and Wonder will be. They are staying in California because of the two agreements signed in 2025 and 2026.

 

The tenth ship is scheduled to be completed in 2028 and delivered early 2029 to the new company formed by the Oriental Land Company to run their fleet there. It will be the first Disney ship to sail out of Tokyo, Japan. It is the fifth Wish-Class ship. More may be ordered once they see how well this ship does.

 

Also in 2029, the first of a new class of Disney Ships will be completed! This class will be slightly larger than the original Classic-Class and carry 3,000 guests. That is 400 more than the Classic-Class and 1,000 less than the Dream-Class. At this time there are a total of  three of these ships have been ordered. First one joins the fleet 2029, second joins the fleet in 2030 and the third joins the fleet in 2031. Where they will be placed is a big question. Once completed there will be thirteen ships in the Disney Fleet. More of these smaller ships may be ordered. I’m waiting for the D23 Expo in August 2026 to see if there are any announcements.

 

I believe the ultimate goal is to have two ships at each homeport with two ships that can be deployed to seasonal destinations, like Europe and even California. They can also be deployed to take over while other ships are in drydock for their required every five-year refurbishments. It is possible that DCL will expand to more homeports on both coasts. Maybe they will do another port in the Gulf of Mexico, East Coast to go to towards Canada, and maybe on the West Coast between California and Canada. Only time and Disney will officially say.

Disney Cruise Line had ordered two what is now called the Wish-Class ships. Then they added two more and quickly added one more for a total of five Wish-Class ships! Of those ships three are already in service and the fourth is in the process of being built. The first three ships are Disney Wish, Disney Treasure and Disney Destiny.

 

The fourth Wish-Class ship was named Disney Believe, March 18^th, 2026. Construction started August 8^th, 2025, on Disney Believe with the Steel Cutting Carmony. March 28^th, 2026, one Funnel and the LNG tank were delivered to the Meyer Werft Shipyard where construction is under way.

 

We know Believe will have the same floor plan as the other Wish-Class ships. Like the other Wish-Class ships she will also have a theme. The theme of Disney Believe will be promise and possibilities.

 

Believe will share powerful tales of characters who believe in themselves. From the mystical worlds of Encanto and Frozen, to the wishing wells of Snow White, to the depths of the sea with Moana and The Little Mermaid there are endless stories waiting to be discovered and now chapters ready to unfold.

 

DCL has not announced the date of the Maiden Voyage at this time. Believe is expected to join the fleet in late 2027.

 

What we don’t know yet:

• Date of Maiden Voyage (LATE 2027 could be any time August-December 2027)
• When will booking open
• Homeport
• Cruise Length (3-4-Night or 7-Night)
• Where she will sail to
• Main Dining Restaurants (We can assume 1923 & World of Marvel will return but what will be the 3^rd restaurant?)

• Bow Art
• Stern Characters
• Live Stage Shows

 

As an addendum I’ll add these two tidbits:

The fifth Wish-Class ships was ordered for the company that owns/runs Disneyland Tokyo. Construction has not started yet but could start in the next four months or so. It should be completed by late 2028 and will sail out of Tokyo beginning early 2029.

 

There are 3 more ships ordered that will be built by Meyer Werft. They will be completed in 2029, 2030 and 2031. Construction of the first one should start sometime in 2027. We know they will be larger than the Magic/Classic-Class and carry about 400 more guests than those ships. They will be smaller than the Dream-Class and carry around 1,000 few guests than those ships.

This is the official release from the Port of San Diego, Ca and Disney Cruise Line. Continue reading after the official comments for my thoughts.

Disney Cruise Line and the Port of San Diego today announced a new agreement through at least 2031, which will approximately double the number of Disney Cruises out of San Diego each year.

 

For guests, this means more opportunities to embark on magical vacations to Catalina Island, Baja and the Mexican Riviera, with a broader rang of seasonal itineraries and more frequent departures.

 

“San Diego has been an import part of our West Coast operations for more than a decade, and a place our guests love sailing from,” said Jose Fernandez, Vice President of Port Strategy, Development & Operations, Disney Cruise Line. “This new agreement supports our long-term growth and helps us continue contributing to the region’s economy.”

 

“We are grateful to continue our long-standing relationship with Disney Cruise Line,” said Chair Ann Moore, Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners. “This agreement not only enhances business operations between the Port, Disney and all our cruise line partners – it also supports a thriving cruise industry that injects missions into the region’s economy and welcomes thousands of visitors to our waterfront each year.”

The agreement secures Disney non-exclusive priority access to the Port’s North and South berths at the B Street cruise terminal, enhancing the arrival experience for passengers while also helping the Port better plan and maximize the use of its cruise ship terminals. This announcement comes as the Port is seeing an upward trajectory in cruise calls and passengers.

 

More than 1 million Disney Passengers are anticipated through the Port during the course of the agreement, representing the first time in more than 20 years that a cruise line has offered a minimum annual guarantee at the Port of San Diego. Disney Cruise Line’s seasonal call on San Diego will continue to bring meaningful economic benefits for the region, supporting local business and fueling jobs tied to cruise operations, tourism and port activity.

 

Disney Cruise Line has been a proud member of the San Diego Community since it first began sailing from the Port in 2012 and remains committed to making meaningful and positive impacts in the region. This work includes collaborations with local nonprofits and focus on youth empowerment and environmental conservation.

 

Most recently, Disney Cruise Line provided career development and financial literacy opportunities to local students from Junior Achievement of San Diego and collaborated with San Diego Coastkeepers to help protect the natural beauty of California coastline.

 

Representing the latest wave in Disney Cruise Line’s period of unprecedented global growth, this agreement ensures that San Diego remains a primary gateway for Disney’s signature brand of storytelling at sea.

 

San Diego will soon welcome two Disney Cruise Line ships for the 2026-2027 season, significantly expanding West Coast sailings options for the cruise line. The Disney Magic arrives in October, offering three – to seven-night voyages through November followed by a 14-night Panama Canal transit to Galveston. The Disney Wonder will homeport in San Diego from October 2026 through April 2027, sailing three – to seven-night itineraries to destinations including Catalina Island, Cabo San Lucas Ensenada and Puerto Vallarta.

 

Pranking Pixie’s Thoughts:

Avalon/Catalina Agreement:

We know DCL and the City of Avalon on Catalina Island signed a similar agreement last year. The agreement allows the following:

DCL will have preferred port assignment twice a week Sept to May and once per week May to Sept. This means that at least ONE Disney ship will be in San Diego year around.

The agreement is for 5 years and can be renewed three more times for 5 years each with increased fees. It can be renewed as it is until 2040.

DCL gave a set promised number of guests they would bring each year.

DCL will help with upgrading the area’s infrastructure to accommodate the guests.

The agreement with Catalina specifically states Disney Magic & Wonder as the ships calling there.

There is a stipulation for a third unnamed ship to also stop there at some point

My Conclusion:

I believe this shows DCL commitment to sailing out of the West Coast.

This is good news for West Coast DCL fans.

Until at least 2029 I can only guess what will happen. Summer 2028, per agreement with Catalina DCL may leave one ship in San Diego while the other summers in Alaska. In 2029 the first of the next class of Disney Ships to be built will join the fleet. At that point it is possible another ship will come West so two ships can go to Alaska.

Reading the San Diego release it sounds like a third ship will stay on the West Coast until after 2031. I may be wrong.

The potential for growth is huge. As the fleet grows so can homeports, including more on the West Coast and even some going North into Canada.

I think this is the start of Disney staying on the West Coast.

We may even see one of the new ships on the West Coast shortly after joining the fleet.

Walt Disney World Resort Vacations for 2027 through Walt Disney Travel Company have been released for theme park tickets, hotel room stays and packages through Oct. 31, 2027!

 

For 2027 bookings, Walt Disney World will be renaming Dining Plans to streamline what they each include. And beginning with bookings arriving Jan. 1, 2027, Walt Disney World will be offering three Dining Plan Options. When more information is available about the new Dining Plans we will share them with you.

The average lifespan of a cruise ship is 30 years. 30 years in the salty ocean water and air do damage to the ship. Every 5 years ships are required to drydock and be inspected for safety, repaired and refreshed but that does not stop the damage.

 

Ships take a lot of harsh abuse. There is no real downtime. All facilities on the ship are used 24/7. Cabins are given around 3 hours to be cleaned between guests. Kitchens cook thousands of meals 3 times a day and then cook more food for snacks day and night. Entertainment is also active all day and night.

 

Ships have minimal access to getting to the “guts” and replacing/repairing old engines, wiring and plumbing. To do major upgrades they have to take the ship to dry dock and that is expensive. Lines do the best they can cleaning and maintaining the ships. Time, exposure to salt water and air, constant use and the fact technology changes and can’t always be update/changed/added to “age” the ships. Disney Cruise Line is top in maintaining the ships, but even Disney can’t stop the march of time. The older the ship the higher the cost of maintaining them.

 

What happens to a ship that is too old? The ship can be sold to a lower-class cruise line. This does happen a lot. The old ship will go into drydock and be reimagined, repainted and renamed by the line that purchased her. She could continue to sail there for another 20 years or so. But you can tell the ship is old. The ship can be scrapped, recoverable items such as copper wire, steel and other items can be removed and recycled. Parts are melted down and material reused. Want can’t be recycled is dumped. A recent and good thing done with retired ships is sinking them. Yes, this has been done for hundreds of years but now there is new twist. Now ships are being sunk where coral reefs have been destroyed or damaged. They remove all items that can damage the environment from the ship and set it up to encourage fish to come in and enjoy it. These are the 3 major things done with old ships.

 

Disney Magic turns 30 in 2028, and Disney Wonder turn 30 in 2029. Along with the information above is enough to make a DCL fan cringe. Does that mean that Magic and Wonder MUST retire in 28 and 29? No. As long as the ships are deemed safe by Maritime regulations and guests keep booking cruises on them, I believe they will keep going. How long do I think they can reasonably keep them going? I’m going to guess 2035 or at the longest 2040.

Disney cannot sell any of their ships to other lines. There is too much Intellectual Property (IP) on the ships that cannot be allowed to go to another company. Scrapping or turning them into coral reefs are the standard options. Disney is anything but standard! I’ve heard rumors that insiders have been begging for the ships to be turned into hotels! Pull them up to a dock permanently. Hook them up for shore power and make them a hotel! Personally, I think this is a win-win for Disney and fans alike!

 

 

Is it still worth it to sail on Magic and Wonder? YES!! The ships are beautiful and all amenities are functioning well, with only a few issues noted. Disney will do their best to keep them going. I believe that 2 of the 3 of the 5^th class of ships were ordered to replace them. But they may order more ships! DCL is expanding, yes, they will lose 2 ships soon but gain more! I believe there may be announcements about more ships being ordered. Watch for D23 in August!

This is just speculation and nothing has been officially announced, I have heard some rumors, but I do not state them as fact. What I’m saying is a sad fact/reality for all cruise ships.

 

FACT: In 2028 Disney Magic turns 30. In 2029 Disney Wonder turns 30. 

This is important to know and is vital information! These ships are magnificent and well maintained, even at 30 they “look” nearly new. Disney does a fantastic job of maintaining them both at an operational and appearance level. I think it is a possibility DCL could keep them in the active fleet until 2035 or maybe a few years longer. But not much longer. The ship(s) may be sold for scrap, sold to another cruise line to “fix up” and rename, or they could be scuttled/sunk and turned into a start of a new coral reef. These are the traditional options.

 

An important fact to understand is the functional life of a Cruise Ship is 30 years. At that point they are retired. Technology has changed. Things can’t be altered because they are incased in steel walls. Equipment ages and fails after time and again, it is in steel walls so hard to deal with. Also, Inside and Oceanview cabins with no open window or balcony begin to smell a little funky. DCL has gone to great lengths to stop this but people use skin products, perfume and other things that smell. Body oils begin to seep into the walls and stay, no matter how well you clean.

 

The chances of DCL selling the ships to another line are slim to none. There is too much Intellectual Property on these ships. Scrapping/Recycling would be hard but is possible. They could keep control of the IP while doing it. Sinking the ships after they have stripped out the IP and whatever else they need to is also a possibility.

 

Rumors are out there that Crew and Shoreside Cast Members and suggesting and pushing for a fourth option! Turn them into shoreside hotels! That would be a great option and opportunity for DCL!

 

San Diego Possibilities:

Because of the possibility of a third ship being added to San Diego to Catalina I believe one or more of the 5^th-Class of ships may be coming 2029-2031 and will call San Diego homeport for at least part of the year. I’m thinking it is possible for the third ship of that class to have its Maiden Voyage out of San Diego. Again, this is a possibility and actually a hope with no announcements or rumors to back the idea. I’m thinking of the ports of call the ships could go to and looking at the way DCL likes to handle ports the smaller ships make more sense to me.

 

After 2031:

• I think DCL will continue to grow. There is a lot of demand. There are a lot of opportunities for DCL.
• DCL could announce more of the 5^th-Class of ships or they could add a 6th-Class of ships to be build.
• DCL could expand further to add homeports in the US West Coast, Europe, Asia, Australia/New Zealand.

What is going on at DCL?? Disney Cruise Line is GROWING!!

In 1998 Disney Cruise Line started sailing out of Port Canaveral, Fl. One ship, Disney Magic was the start. In 1999 Disney Wonder joined her twin sister sailing out of Port Canaveral. 12 years later in 2011 and 2012 Disney Dream and Fantasy joined Magic and Wonder. 8 years later 2 new ships were ordered! 10 years after Fantasy, Disney Wish joined the fleet in 2022!! With one more Wish-Class ship being constructed. Exciting news came out just before Wish was completed! DCL added one more ship to the order! Due to Covid Wish construction was delayed and that lead to delays in future ships. Disney Treasure joined the fleet in 2024. But before construction of Treasure another bombshell of an announcement was made by DCL adding One more Wish-Class ships to the fleet for a total of four Wish-Class ships!! Disney Destiny joined the fleet in 2025. Disney Believe, the fourth Wish-Class ship will join the fleet at the end of 2027! I’m speculating it will be late November or December 2027.

 

Shortly after the announcement of the two additional Wish-Class ships DCL announced the Oriental Land Company, Owner/Operators of Disneyland Tokyo/Disney Seas wanted their own Wish-Class ship to operate out of Japan!! DCL will work in conjunction with OLC running their line. More Ships may be ordered for OLC if the first ship is profitable. OLC has already said they expect it to be profitable in one year. OLC’s Wish-Class ship construction has not started as of today. I believe it will start sometime later this year. It should be completed by late 2028 so it can do sea trials. Disney has confirmed it will be delivered to OLC in 2029 to go into service. I believe that the Maiden Voyage of this ship will be early 2029.

 

Now we are taking a short step back to mention a special ship, Disney Adventure. Disney Adventure is a one-of-a-kind ship. It was purchased in 2022 by DCL as a ¾ built ship. The cruise line that ordered the ship had gone bankrupt during the Covid Pandemic and so had the shipyard building it. DCL purchased it and repurposed it as best they could and it is just started sailing out of Singapore. Its Maiden Voyage was March 10^th, 2026. Be aware! If booking on this ship some things are now like they are on the other ships of the fleet. It can accommodate 6,700 guests. The ship is HUGE. The rooms are built more to the standard of the traditional cruise lines. The rooms are considerably smaller than Disney purpose-built ships. It has neighborhoods more like the Royal Caribbean ships and has balcony cabins looking into the middle of the ship instead of the ocean.

What the Future for DCL?

NEW PORTS:

• Disney will be added 2 more year-round ports starting at the end of 2027!
• Up until 2023 DCL had only sailed out of Port Canaveral year-round. Other ports were seasonal. Miami, Fort Lauderdale Florida, LA and then San Diego, CA, Galveston, Alaska (sailing from Vancouver, Canada and Europe were the seasonal ports.
• In 2023 Fort Lauder, Fl was added as a year-round homeport for DCL.
• Starting September 2027 DCL is adding Galveston, Tx and San Diego, Ca to year-round DCL cruising!
• DCL has not announced what ship will be homeported at Galveston, Tx. It could be either a Dream-Class or a Wish-Class ship.
• DCL and Catalina Island, Ca have announced that both of the Magic/Classic-Class ships will be homeporting in San Diego and sailing to Catalina once or twice per week year-round. There is an option for a third unspecified/named ship to be included in that mix.

 

CURRENT Ship Construction Timeline:

• 2026 – OLC’s yet-to-be-named Wish-Class ship will start construction. 
• This is the 5^th Wish-Class ship and last one . . . for now. My guess is sometime between August and October for the laying of the Keel Coin and start of construction.
• 2027 – Wish-Class, Disney Believe will join the fleet and most likely will be based in the USA. 
• I’m guessing she will have her Maiden Voyage in November. 
• What port Believe will call home has not been announced. It could be Port Canaveral or Fort Lauderdale. It might be Galveston, Tx. We do not know yet, but my guess is one of the two Florida ports will be its homeport to start.
• 2027 – Construction of the first of the new 5^th yet-to-be-named-Class of ships will begin sometime for delivery in 2029.
• We know very little about the 5^th yet-to-be-named-Class. It will be larger than the Magic/Classic-Class and carry 3,000 guests, 400 more than the Magic/Classic-Class. 1,000 less guests than the Dream or Wish-Class ships.
• 2028 – OLC’s yet-to-be-named Wish-Class ship will be completed. I’m guessing this will be fall of 2028.
• 2028 – Construction of Second the yet-to-be-named-5^th-Class will start.
• 2029 – OLC’s yet-to-be-named Wish-Class ship will start sailing out of Tokyo, Japan.
• 2029 – First of the yet-to-be-named-5^th-Class will join the fleet.
• We have no idea what homeport any of this class well start at.
• 2029 – Construction of Third the yet-to-be-named-5^th-Class will start.
• 2030 – Second of the yet-to-be-named-5^th-Class will join the fleet.
• 2031 – Third of the yet-to-be-named-5^th-Class will join the fleet.

Let it be understood that the information here is what is out as of end of March 2026. Anything can change at any time.

 

August 2026 is the D23 Fan Event in Anaheim. This is where they make major announcements of what is going on in the Disney Company. Everything comes out! Movie, Games, Entertainment, Park growth and even Disney Cruise Line changes/additions. We will be adding more to this at that time! Anything can happen! They may order more ships. They may announce the retirement date of the Magic/Classic ships. (More on the retirement, why and what may happen later.)

Disney Adventure is the latest ship to join the Disney Fleet. Her Maiden Voyage was March of 2026. She is unique to the Disney Cruise Line. Up until Adventure all of Disney’s ships were purpose build and designed by Disney with the help of the ship builders. Adventure was not originally a Disney Ship and was not purpose built for Disney. She is also bigger than any other Disney ship and carries up to 6,700 passengers.

 

There was a Chinese Cruise Line that ordered the ship. It was being built in Germany. The line was forced to shut down because of financial issues caused by Covid. The shipyard building the ship also went under because they had a 75-80% built ship sitting in their yard with no promise of payment. Shipyards don’t get paid for building the ship until delivery. Disney stepped in and purchased the unfinished ship and redesigned areas of the ship. You would think Disney reimagined the ship so it should be ok and totally “Disney”. It truly is not.

 

Disney Staterooms are an average of 25% larger than industry standard. The Adventure’s staterooms are industry standard. They are smaller than Disney Cruise fans expect. The ship is designed with 7 themed area/neighborhoods with no Grand Hall/Lobby. When you board it is not into the lobby with throngs of people, characters and maybe even a little show going on. I honestly do not see Disney making another one of these ships and I think they were wise to release it where the did. It is not the typical market for Disney Cruise Line and will open the door for more ships there. Adventure is sailing out of Singapore on 3-4-Night Cruises at sea. No ports at all.

I'm not trying to discourage anybody from sailing on the Adventure. She is beautiful and does have a lot to offer but looks more like a Royal Caribbean ship than a Disney ship. She more of a floating amusement park than a cruise ship.
